The Queue: Trial and error

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft.

Hello, everyone! Did you all grieve for me yesterday when The Queue never showed up? Yes, I apologize. My internet connection going down for 14 hours sort of caused some problems. But I'm back and better than ever! Well, I'm back at least. That second part is still up for debate.

Spoonman asked...

I have been hearing that the price for epic flying mount is going to drop to around 2500g, have you heard anything about this?

Client patches for Wrath of the Lich King

To play Wrath tonight you'll need to update the game. The game installs version 3.0.1 when you upgrade to Wrath, and you'll need to update it version to 3.0.3. That means installing the following two patches:
  • Version 3.0.1 - > Version 3.0.2
  • Version 3.0.2 -> Version 3.0.3
You are in luck though and don't have to wait around to download them all. We have the files hosted over at our sister site Big Download. Take a look after the break for a complete list of the files you'll need to get.

Note: If you saved the files from previous patches, you're all set. But be sure they work and are fully saved before you go out and get Wrath tonight – no need to waste time downloading stuff again.

World of Warcraft 3.0.3 Patch notes

We have the patch notes for tomorrow's 3.0.3 patch. As a reminder: it is always possible these notes might change at any time. Sometimes even though we're expecting certain things in them, they are not included.

With these notes we know that 3.0.3 will be dropping tomorrow. The patch will fix many bugs in the game currently, and hopefully bring more stability to the servers. Paladins are getting nerfed, Warriors are getting buffed, and there are more changes across the board.

And best of all? We can all now earn the "Hallowed Be thy Name" achievement much, much easier.

Full patch notes after the break. And don't forget to check out the 3.0.2 patch notes if you have more questions about what some of these changes mean.

Don't delete your 3.0.x patches just yet

Most of you have hopefully managed to get patched up to 3.0.2 by now, and fortunately it seems like the servers are stable enough that we can often get some playtime in (with last night being an exception, at least for my realm). If you have installed the patches, I have a word of advice from you, straight from Eyonix: Do not delete your 3.0.x patch files. You will need them when you install Wrath of the Lich King.

The reason for this is that the Wrath DVDs, having gone gold a week ago, contains an installer for patch 3.0.1, so after installing the Wrath client, you'll have to patch back up to 3.0.2 (will almost certainly be at least 3.0.3 by then, actually). So if you delete your patches now, you'll just have to re-download them on November 13th, and it's a good bet that that will not be a pleasant experience. Save your patches!

Patch 3.0.2 mirrored at Big Download

Many readers are still reporting problems downloading patch 3.0.2, possibly the largest patch WoW has ever received (in terms of both file size and number of changes). The Blizzard Downloader is a clever adaptation of BitTorrent, and while it does a good job of lightening the load on Blizz's servers and distributing the patch files to those of us who are able to forward ports and open firewalls, not everyone is in that position. Some people really just want a straight HTTP download of the patch files.

Fortunately, our sister site Big Download is here to help. They're hosting all the patch files, for both Mac and Windows, BC players and classic. Part of the confusion here is that there were actually two patches yesterday, 3.0.1 and 3.0.2. They must be applied in that order, and then you'll be ready to play. All the instructions are over at Big Download; they'll have you up and running in short order.

Background downloader working as planned

Lots of people have been pointing out the activity of their background downloader. Yesterday Zarhym announced that the download would startup soon, delivering the first part of the 3.0.1 content patch.

The downloader is running along for many of us – both the North American and European versions. The patch files it is downloading are between 821 and 992 megs. Be sure to let it run only overnight if you don't want any problems while you run your groups or raids.

To exit the downloader, Windows users can click the Blizzard icon near the clock on the taskbar and choose "Cancel" when the window appears. Macintosh users can go to the file menu and choose "Quit" when the downloader application is in the foreground. The download will restart the next time you launch WoW.

Patch 3.0.1 will bring about a ton of changes in preparation for Wrath of the Lich King. There is no announced release date yet for WotLK, nor is there a date for when 3.0.1 will go onto the live realms. However most people expect 3.0.1 to hit the live realms in a month or so, and Wrath to be released in early November. Some of the major highlights of 3.0.1 include:
