Spiritual Guidance: The shadow priest's guide to patch 4.1

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Each Wednesday, the priestly Fox Van Allen takes on all topics shadow. If you'd like to see Spiritual Guidance in person, send your request along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to TICKETS, "Spiritual Guidance," CBS Television City, 7800 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, California 90036.

New patches almost always mean changes to classes, specs, and abilities. In this respect, patch 4.1 is no different. For shadow priests, patch 4.1 brings huge nerfs. It also brings huge buffs. There's an awful lot to keep straight.

Thankfully, you don't need to go it alone. Spiritual Guidance is here to help.

Gold Capped: Patch 4.1 and Maelstrom Crystals

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Gold Capped, in which Basil "Euripides" Berntsen aims to show you how to make money on the auction house. Email Basil with your questions, comments, or hate mail!

Is the sky falling? Will patch 4.1 herald the end of the high price for Maelstrom Crystals? The informal communication channels between auctioneers (sharing market analyses with each other in IRC and custom channels or tells in game and on gold blogs) have been abuzz with the frantic analysis that patch 4.1 will drive the price of Maelstroms down to ridiculously low amounts. Personally, I'm not sure I'd blindly buy that.

Patch 4.1 PTR patch notes update for March 22

A set of new PTR patch notes has just dropped, and there are some pretty interesting changes involved for just about all players. There are a number of class changes: Mages are getting buffs to their Frostbolt and Fingers of Frost abilities; holy paladins will be seeing yet another mastery buff; and enhancement shaman are getting a brand new talent to replace Improved Fire Nova.

Raiders will be interested to see that Maelstrom Crystals are now available for purchase with honor or justice points. PvPers will be interested to see that battlegrounds will award significantly more guild experience. And those currently leveling alts will be thrilled to know that Blizzard is scrapping the Staff of Prehistoria mechanic in Uldaman. (The Indiana Jones aspect of it was cool, but since the introduction of the random dungeon finder, the mechanic was just plain broken.)

The full PTR patch notes update is available after the break.

Spiritual Guidance: Patch 4.1 to usher in big Chakra and Atonement healing changes

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Dawn Moore covers healing for discipline and holy priests, while her archenemy Fox Van Allen dabbles in shadow and karaoke at PAX East. Dawn also writes for and produces the Circle of Healing Podcast.

It's been two weeks since we first examined the upcoming priest changes for patch 4.1, and in that time, many more changes have piled up. To keep things interesting around here, I figured we'd talk about the changes over a plate of cookies.

Previously, we discussed the changes to the duration of Power Word: Shield, the tiny buff to Divine Aegis, and the huge change to Dispel Magic, so check back a couple weeks if you want to read about those changes. This week I'll be looking at a huge change to the mechanics of Chakra, the sort of return of Atonement healing, the nerf to Power Word: Barrier, and the tweak to our four-piece raid set bonus.

Patch 4.1: What we know so far

Patch 4.1, the first major content patch of Cataclysm's life cycle, has been mentioned a few times lately here on WoW Insider, sparked by Alex Afrasiabi's commentary narrating a zone overview for G4. Since then, many players have asked the question: What is actually in patch 4.1? What do we know about it? Do we know anything?

We don't know everything that will be contained in patch 4.1, but between BlizzCon and more recent information, Blizzard has already outlined a number of the major features from the patch. Let's take a look at those features, shall we?

Alex Afrasiabi discusses new zones and upcoming content on G4

Getting a little tired of the same old grind, even though it's been barely a month? Cataclysm is far from over, and developments will continue to roll out in future patches and updates. Blizzard's Lead World Designer Alex Afrasiabi leads players through a guided tour of the new Cataclysm zones and sheds some light on upcoming content through a series of videos posted on

Among some of the tidbits discussed are the following fascinating bits of information:
  • a new boss is on the horizon in Vash'jir -- animal Gods?
  • roleplaying aspects of the redesigned Stormwind (we wrote about a few already)
  • lore behind Uldum and how it ties into Ulduar
  • a future content patch will see Hyjal fully healed, and new daily quests
  • a future patch will introduce boat races for players in Thousand Needles
Sound like fun? Check out all the zone videos and commentary over on G4.

BlizzCon 2010: Patch 4.1.0 brings enhanced dungeon maps

Cory Stockton (World of Warcraft lead content designer) announced an unexpected feature that will be coming in patch 4.1.0. It has been revealed that Blizzard is adding maps for all dungeons from Burning Crusade all the way back to classic in order to match the features that the current Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm dungeons bring with them.

The new information is that they're planning on taking those maps up a notch. Instead of just a stylized skull icon marking where the bosses are on the map, we'll be getting enhanced information about each boss encounter.

This will include a 3D portrait of the boss, a brief bit of lore about why exactly you're fighting them and a list of what all loot drops. While all that is all well and good, this is not where the new features end.

The interface will also give you a listing of what abilities each boss uses. That doesn't mean that you are given the strategy, but instead you'll be able to find out what things to look for during the encounter and react a little faster. You'll know if a debuff will be something that you must cleanse immediately or something that you'll be able to ignore for a moment while healing and then get to when you have a moment. These features will not only be for 5-man content, but will also be available in 10/25-man raids as well as heroic content.

Their reasoning behind this is two-fold. First, a lot of players already tab out to check sites like Wowhead to find out loot and boss abilities. Secondly, when presented with a new dungeon a player doesn't have to have as many things explained by the dungeon guide. We'll see how this develops when 4.1.0 starts to get closer.
