Patch 4.2 release patch notes

Patch 4.2 is, as the numbering implies, the second major content patch for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. It is the first patch to add a new tier of raiding this expansion, and it also adds a new daily quest hub and countless class changes.

This patch has been on the PTR for nearly two months, but it will very soon be coming to a live realm near you. Be prepared! The most up-to-date version of the patch notes you'll find are behind the cut below.

Keep an eye on WoW Insider throughout today's maintenance for more information on how to prepare yourself for patch 4.2!

Patch 4.2: Normal mode tier 11 encounters nerfed

Patch 4.2 PTR testing is in full swing, and we've got another round of patch notes, courtesy of Zarhym and the official Warcraft blog. Today's notes are primarily a metric ton of nerfs to normal mode encounters in Blackwing Descent, Bastion of Twilight, and Throne of the Four Winds. The nerfs were explained by Nethaera as follows:

Nethaera
With the upcoming content patch, 10- and 25-person Normal mode raid encounters will be receiving a comprehensive set of tuning adjustments to decrease their difficulty.

These changes will allow players, groups, and guilds who have yet to experience the content in Blackwing Descent, Bastion of Twilight, and Throne of the the Four Winds an opportunity to do so.

With the addition of a new tier of armor and weapons, we want to make the previous tier more accessible in ways other than just a shift of currency type, so we are making item level 359 gear purchasable for Justice points in the upcoming content patch.

Spiritual Guidance: Will patch 4.2 redefine what it means to be a shadow priest?

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Every Wednesday, shadow priesting expert Fox Van Allen rains sheer purple destruction down on the growing list of WoW Insider columnists who oppose him (and sometimes, even on those who don't).

I am Fox, thy columnist, who hath brought thee out of the land of the Light, out of the house of Dawn Moore. For thee, my loyal followers, I offer the 10 commandments of the house of shadow (subsequently edited down to five by his cruel editorial overseers):
  • Thou shalt have no other columnists before me.
  • Thou shalt not lie with Tyler as one lies with Fox; Tyler is detestable.
  • Thou shalt kill. With high DPS.
  • Thou shalt covet the hell out of thy neighbor's Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest, because that thing is sweet.
  • Thou shalt not freak the hell out over patch notes, even when they involve slashing the damage caused by our DOTs.

Patch 4.2 Public Test Realm Guide [Updated 5/13]
  • Devouring Plague damage done has been decreased by 12%.
  • Mind Blast damage done has been increased by 12%.
  • Shadow Word: Death damage done has been increased by 12%.
  • Shadow Word: Pain damage done has been decreased by 12%.
  • Mind Flay damage done has been increased by 12%.
  • Vampiric Touch damage done has been decreased by 12%.

The above patch notes, which detail a 12%, across-the-board cut to DOTs (and an accompanying 12% across-the-board buff to direct damage spells), represents the first major change for shadow priests to come out of the PTR. But what exactly does the change mean, and why was it done? Are shadow priests going to lag behind in patch 4.2? Are shadow priests being pushed away from a DOT-heavy model and toward something else?

Arcane Brilliance: On the 12th tier and the set bonuses thereof

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Arcane Brilliance for arcane, fire and frost mages. This week, we'll be discussing the Firelands patch and the sweet new mage gear it will be providing to us. Also, what is that thing sticking out of our helmets? Is that a tail? Made of fire? A flaming headtail of magical might?

So we're only a few weeks into patch 4.1, and already our sights are focused squarely on patch 4.2. You can hardly blame us, though. I mean, while I am thoroughly enjoying the current patch, what with its freshly recycled 5-man content and its new Dungeon Finder Call to Arms that I don't seem to benefit from in the slightest (my queue times are right back up to 30 minutes, thanks), but I think we can all agree that for a major content patch, 4.1 was substantially light on ... well, content.

Not so with 4.2. Patch 4.2 will be bringing us the Firelands, which is apparently a raid where epic cupcakes fall from the sky like rain, hardcore raiders experience orgasms just by zoning in, and we all ride flaming unicorns across lava bridges to do battle with volcanic dragon manticores. I'm not kidding. The entire raid sounds like something you'd see painted across the side of a rock band tour van in the '70s. We're also getting two new daily quest areas with their own epic loot vendors, and yes, the game's first legendary staff. And no, it doesn't have spirit on it.

New raid content means new tier sets, and this time around, we're reaching a cool dozen. The tier 12 set bonuses are interesting, to say the least, and bear a bit of looking at. Keep in mind, though, as we discuss these bonuses that we're still early in the PTR process, and everything on the test realms right now is entirely subject to change -- which is, in this case, a very good thing.

Patch 4.2 PTR notes for May 13

Fresh from the official Warcraft blog, we've got another round of patch 4.2 hotfixes, courtesy of Blizzard Community Representative Zarhym. Today's notes include some class changes, including a few tweaks to the priest class, some new voices and a new achievement. Also included is the unnerfing of fun, for those who enjoy dancing in combat:
  • Players are once again free to dance in combat. Be sure to equip your dancing shoes before you fight, okay?
  • Vanessa VanCleef now has a "sweet, sweet voice" for all her dialogue in heroic Deadmines.
  • The achievement "Bear-ly Made It" has been added for those that save all four prisoners in Zul'Aman on heroic difficulty.

Totem Talk: The evolution of elemental shaman in patch 4.2

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement and restoration shaman. Get some Fulmination with your Lightning Bolts! Sort the shocks from the flames with Totem Talk: Elemental, brought to you by Sarah Nichol, otherwise known as Pewter from The 'mental Shaman, co-host of the Obscurecast, and founding member of TotemSpot.

I'm sure some of you have noticed my lengthy absence from these hallowed pages -- but fear not, for the druid columnists have not succeeded in hunting me down yet! Since my last post, my guild has celebrated its second birthday, I've moved house, moved offices and started studying part-time. Now I am back and ready to ruminate some more.

Last time I posted, I covered some of my favorite addons, and I did promise some Power Auras, but with some of the rather out-there changes appearing in patch 4.2, I want to talk about the direction that Cataclysm is taking the elemental spec. Let's start by taking a look at the relevant patch 4.2 notes after the jump.

Patch 4.2 PTR notes for May 10

Patch 4.2 is looking pretty promising on the content front, what with new raids, new dailies -- and oh yes, a legendary staff on the horizon. Today we've got some updates to the Patch 4.2 PTR notes, courtesy of Zarhym over on the official Warcraft blog. Included are a ton of notes for druids, paladins and shaman, among other classes, some changes to the way buffs are applied and some changes to the guild leveling system.
  • All class abilities that place a buff on friendly targets no longer generate threat, with the exception of buffs that directly cause healing or damage, such as Thorns or Renew.
  • When interrupted while casting a single-spell school, players will now be able to cast dual-school spells. In other words, if you're interrupted casting Frostbolt, you'll still be able to cast Frostfire Bolt despite being locked out of the Frost school.
  • The daily guild experience cap and weekly guild reputation cap have been increased by 25% -- and the guild experience cap is now removed at level 20 instead of level 23.

World of Warcraft patch 4.2 patch notes

It has just been announced that Blizzard is in the process of activating the patch 4.2 PTR. So far, the patch is light on patch notes but heavy on content, much of which pertains to the previews we've posted earlier in the week: WoW Insider will be sure to provide ongoing coverage of this patch, as we do with all content patches. You can read the patch 4.2 patch notes below.

Edit: Patch notes have been updated to reflect their status on live realms, rather than what they were when the patch hit the PTR.
