Lichborne: Patch 5.1 for death knights

Lichborne Patch 51 notes for death knights
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Lichborne for blood, frost, and unholy death knights. In the post-Cataclysm era, death knights are no longer the new kids on the block. Let's show the other classes how a hero class gets things done.

Patch 5.1
contains relatively few direct death knight changes, but those changes it has are large enough to talk about. PvE escapes relatively unscathed and gets a few nice goodies, but PvP takes a bit of a hit. Today, we'll talk about what patch 5.1 has in store for death knights thus far.

The death of Death Strike in PvP?

So far, there is one single class change for death knights in the patch notes, but it is a doozy. Death Strike's bonus healing from taking damage will no longer apply to damage received from PvP combat.

This doesn't mean, of course, that death knights are completely without healing in PvP now. They should still successfully get the minimum heal and the shield it provides. It does mean, however, that they lose a lot of self healing, enough that a lot of people are working on their frost and unholy PvP skills once again.

Patch 5.1: Pet battle UI changes

Patch 51 Pet battle UI changes
Blizzard has integrated the features of many current add-ons into the pet battle UI for patch 5.1. The journal, wild pet tooltips, and battle UI now display information making it easier to choose which pets to capture and which to kill.
  • During battle, the quality of the pet is shown in the color of the opponent creature's name as well as the border of the icon. This renders Pet Battle Glow unnecessary.
  • Mousing over a pet in the wild now shows how many of that creature you have collected, if any. It does not show what the highest quality of that particular pet you own, however. So the Pet Caught add-on will still give more information than the new UI.
  • Mousing over the opponent creature during the battle will also display how many of the pets you own, but again, not their qualities.
More changes are after the break.

Patch 5.1 PTR: Reputation rewards for Alliance and Horde

Patch 51 PTR Reputation rewards for Alliance and Horde
Patch 5.1 introduces two new factions -- Operation Shieldwall for the Alliance, and the Dominance Offensive for the Horde. With these two new factions are new dailies to complete that involve the new faction areas in the Krasarang Wilds. Although the new factions are meant to encourage world PvP, it is not necessary to flag in order to participate in the quests. So far the daily quests involve gathering resources and cheerfully murdering the other faction.

And of course both sides have their own sets of reputation rewards available for purchase with Justice and Valor points. There is a reputation requirement on gear, but it never goes above Revered -- the only bonus to being exalted is the sweet new mounts that were datamined earlier this month. As for the gear, some items can be purchased immediately for Justice points, but the more valuable gear requires at least honored reputation to obtain.

If you're interested in seeing what your faction has to offer in 5.1, check out the full galleries below.

Patch 5.1 PTR: Reputation changes with Grand Commendations

With all the back and forth discussion of reputation in Mists of Pandaria, it's probably worth taking the time to cover the Grand Commendations and how they work. Our friends over at Wowhead have posted a roundup of the Grand Commendation system, covering each faction and how the new system will work.

The Grand Commendation for a faction works like this - once one of your characters reaches revered with a faction, they can purchase one of these Commendations, which once used will then allow all characters on the account to gain double reputation with said faction. Originally, this was going to simply be automatically implemented, but Blizzard decided that didn't feel obvious enough and wanted something in game to allow players to be aware of the changes. It should be noted these are as yet only for Mists reputations.

In addition to all the current Mists of Pandaria reputations, the new Horde and Alliance factions the Dominance Offensive and Operation: Shieldwall will also have Grand Commendations. In addition to making it easier for alts to level their reputations, it seems to me that these will also make the climb through revered to exalted easier as well - the text on the Commendations does not exclude the original character from the reputation gains, after all. Head over to Wowhead for the complete list of Commendations by faction.

Patch 5.1 PTR: Blizzard reserves the final Darkmoon word

Patch 51 PTR Darkmoon trinkets nerfed
With this morning's minor PTR patch, a few changes were datamined, most notably to the trinkets earned from the Darkmoon Faire. Another small addition revealed itself, an achievement associated with the Wrathion quest chain called A Test of Valor.

The Darkmoon Faire trinkets were said to have seen the stat levels of their procs altered considerably, indicating that they had all been nerfed down to a default value of 2,682 from their current positions.

But datamining isn't always accurate. Lead Systems Designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street has tweeted in the past about this, and reiterated his message today with this missive:

Blizzard Blue Daxxarri then added a similar message to the US forums:

Daxxarri
No! Bad! Stop pointing to data-mined content as fact. The change that got picked up was actually an adjustment to Darkmoon Card trinkets for Challenge Mode stat scaling.

While it's important that the Darkmoon trinkets weren't nerfed, the big message here is that datamined content is not always fact. Yes, dataminers get a lot right, but always take their information with a pinch of salt.

Patch 5.1: Latest build is a release candidate

Patch 51 Latest build is a release candidate
On logging in to the Patch 5.1 PTR this morning to investigate some other issue, WoW Insider noticed a rather important change to the version information, which can always be found to the bottom left-hand side of the screen. This usually indicates the build of the PTR that is active on servers, notable but not of huge interest, but it recently changed:
Patch 51 Latest build is a release candidate
While this is exciting, it definitely doesn't mean that Patch 5.1 is ready to go live. This is one of what could well be several release candidates, far from a complete version. At the Activision Blizzard Investor Call, however, Mike Morhaime did mention that World of Warcraft had more content coming during the holiday season.

Will Blizzard be able to keep up this pace? While patch 5.1 isn't complete, it's only been 8 weeks since the launch of Mists of Pandaria.

Blood Pact: How to use your warlock's party toys

Blood Pact Working with a warlock in party MON
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Pact for affliction, demonology, and destruction warlocks. This week, Megan O'Neill steps back to cover some group functions of warlocks she feels she must explain every week to her raidmates anyway.

It's in our fel nature to want to work alone, but warlocks actually have some great party utility. We lost some of that utility in Cataclysm with the advent of a specific guild perk, but now in Mists of Pandaria we've resurfaced in lore and game mechanics. It's time to relearn our old tricks and introduce a new party toy to group content play.

Blizzard Talks about Brawler's Guild

Blizzard Talks about Brawler's Guild
Firstly, an announcement. Blizzard's made the "First rule..." joke now. Everyone else can stop, OK? Good. On with the post. Blizzard hasn't just been busy talking about Brawler's Guild. No, the developers have been trying to readdress some communication failings that, apparently, led to people erroneously thinking the Brawler's Guild was this big new feature that everyone would want to enjoy. I was definitely one of those people. Readers could tell as much from earlier coverage.

So when Blizzard announced the method of gaining entry, I was among those who were annoyed. But now, the community managers have stepped in to address the concerns of players like me. The post splits out what Brawler's Guild is and isn't, and probably most important among the "isn't" section is "A major patch feature accessible to everyone (at first)".

And this is where I'm not sure I agree with Blizzard. From a lore perspective, there are definitely bigger things afoot for both the Alliance and the Horde, and there's the addition of the two new factions, their quest hubs, gear and daily quests to look forward to, as well as new scenarios. And that's all great, but for me, Brawler's Guild is the major feature of patch 5.1.

Patch 5.1: New Alliance footage of Lion's Landing

SPOILER ALERT! This video contains spoilers about 5.1, Varian, Anduin, all manner of Alliance and Pandaria spoilers. Even a few Horde ones. Watch at your own risk.

This video, like the Horde one posted earlier, relates to quest chains for the new factions appearing in Krasarang Wilds with Patch 5.1. The Horde faction is the Dominance Offensive, but our interest here lies with the Alliance Faction, Operation: Shieldwall. The faction is stationed in Lion's Landing, where they landed after sending their elite force ahead to assist the White Pawn.

Like almost all Pandaria-based factions, Operation Shieldwall comes with quest chains, from which this spoiler-tastic video is extracted. These quests award reputation, which can also be earned via the completion of daily quests, and allows the purchase of various items.

But that's not the sole focus of this video! More spoilers after the break.

Patch 5.1 PTR: Upgrading items with justice and valor

Patch 51 PTR Item Upgrading
One of the most interesting features of Patch 5.1 is the ability to upgrade your items with justice and valor points (as well as upgrading PvP items with honor and conquest points) and in order to give you a sense of what the current state of this feature is on the PTR, I went looking for the upgrade vendor. They're not hard to find -- look for the ethereals who do transmogrification and reforging, and you'll find them standing in the same areas. I confirmed this by going to Orgrimmar and the Shrine of Seven Stars, and there they were.

Since I was on a premade character with no honor or conquest gear and no epics, I could only test the justice point interface. Still, it's worth taking a look at how the process will work. As you can see from the above screenshot, the current interface will look familiar if you've reforged your gear at any point. But there are some differences.

Brawler's Guild: There must be another way

Brawler's Guild There must be another way
Regular WoW Insider readers may have caught sight of my earlier piece regarding Brawler's Guild. I hope it came across in that piece just how excited I was about this impending new feature, how much I wanted to keep doing it despite the fact that it awarded nothing but fun and ranking. I mentioned that there were likely to be changes coming to two elements, the rotten fruit thrown by other players at the person fighting, and the queue times.

I postulated that a fix for the queue times, which were very long indeed on the Patch 5.1 PTR and promised to be even longer on live servers, could be something along the lines of instancing, using the new scenario technology, phasing, or simply introducing more rings somehow. I did not anticipate that the proposed solution would be to make this fantastic new feature invitation only, and that those invitations would only be sold on the Black Market Auction House.

I didn't anticipate this for several reasons. Firstly, the Brawler's Guild is far too brilliant an idea for Blizzard to want to gate it. It wouldn't make sense to me that, given that most players can access this, they should be prevented from doing so. It's a really brilliant side feature, a game within the game. At the time of writing, it awards no gear, no useable boost or bonus. It's like pet battles, only now it's invitation only.

Patch 5.1: New Naxxramas battle pets terrorize their way onto your team

Loatheb, a larger version of the Fungal Abomination pet.
Of all the 5.1 news that's been released so far, some of our favorite changes and additions involve battle pets. The first is the introduction of new rarity stones that will make your poorly statted yet hard-to-find pets better. Even cooler than that, Blizzard is introducing an entire new set of battle pets into the game as rewards for killing old world bosses.

Today we'll focus our attention on the three ghoulish gifts that drop off bosses in Naxxramas. These creepy undead come with a variety of suitably spooky abilities, and all promise to fit well into many competitive battle pet teams. Undead are one of the best types in pet battling, due to their powerful passive self-resurrection ability and that they're super-effected by critters, one of the worst types in the game. I'm hoping that this trio of terrible terrors might cause us to start seeing something other than Lil' K.T. and Landro's Lichling in PVP pet battles.

How to consume friends and alienate people

Stitched Pupling drops off Gluth, the third boss of Naxxramas' abomination quarter. Despite his terrifying visage, this pup is more of guard dog. While we don't know his approximate stats yet, we do have an idea of his moveset (though no knowledge of which column the abilities fall into). He has two self-heals in Plagued Blood and Consume Corpse. Plagued Blood also gives him some nice utility for your next pet to switch in on, and Consume Corpse's large heal combined with this pup's undead nature guarantee a prolonged war of attrition will be needed to take him down.

Patch 5.1: Vol'jin gets a new model

Patch 51 Vol'jin gets a new model
MMO-Champion has the above image of Vol'jin, refurbished in time for his starring turn in his upcoming patch 5.1 scenario. In fact, according to Wowhead, Vol'jin will now come in two versions, healthy and battle damaged. He's like a Masters of the Universe toy now! Vol'jin's long been a fan favorite as head of the Darkspear Tribe of trolls, a major lore figure and friend of Thrall, and he's moved to prominence as the most opposed in the current Horde leadership to Garrosh Hellscream. It looks like that opposition may have cost him a bit.

There are also several new loading screens, including this one featuring Vol'jin himself that's probably connected to his scenario. Considering he's being featured in a novel next year as well, it seems likely that Vol'jin and the Darkspear are moving into a far more prominent role both in the Horde, and in the World of Warcraft as a whole. It may be too early to call, but I definitely see a surge for Vol'jin as Warchief.

Patch 5.1 PTR: Darkmoon hats, new pet models and more

Darkmoon hats, new pet models and more
Care for a fancy hat? Wowhead found some new models from the patch 5.1 PTR server, including a stunning array of fancy chapeaus courtesy of the Darkmoon Faire. Each has its own bizarre style, and some even include animations like flickering lights or bobbles that sway in the breeze. Wowhead has animated versions of all of the models so you can see the movements for yourself. How exactly one goes about obtaining these hats is unknown at this point, but you'll be able to find them at the Darkmoon Faire next patch.

In addition, MMO-Champion dug up some new pet models from the PTR, including clockwork bears, cats and dinosaurs as well as an adorable group of red panda models in an assortment of colors. There have been some changes to pets as well -- Mr. Bigglesworth is no longer a drop from Kel'Thuzad. Instead, he's a reward for completing the achievement Raiding With Leashes, which requires the collection of all the new pets that have been added to raids.

Since the new patch notes indicate players will no longer need to be in a raid group to enter pre-Mists of Pandaria raids, it should be even easier to get your hands on these new pets. Take a look at MMO-Champion for pet models, and head to Wowhead for the animated versions of all of the new hat models so you can see the movements for yourself.

Patch 5.1 PTR: My first night in Brawler's Guild

My first night in Brawler's Guild
It took me a little while to locate this secretive group's headquarters, tucked away in the bowels of Stormwind. I wasn't quite sure where to look, having logged in to the PTR and created a level 90 shaman template character, and the first rule of Brawler's Guild wasn't exactly helping matters.

I knew it was underground, so I checked in the Stockades, under the Cathedral, around the old Park, over where all the warlocks hang out... it sounded like a warlock-y kind of thing! Stumped, temporarily, and trying to think of other underground areas in Stormwind, it suddenly occurred to me: the Deeprun Tram! I zoned in, expecting to see it right in front of me, and, discouraged, ran over to the platform, then spotted a tunnel on the track level to the left that I was fairly sure wasn't there before.

And the header image was what appeared at the end of it! Over on the Horde side, it was hidden in plain sight, in a building to the extreme north-east of Orgrimmar, in the Ring of Valor. I have to say, I think that, for a change, the Alliance have by far the cooler set-up here, although with the buggy PTR gameplay right now, the Horde arena is far more entertaining!
