Patch 5.2 Gear Previews: Season 13, tier 15, and Throne of Thunder

Patch 52 Gear Previews Season 13, tier 15, and Throne of Thunder
If you've been waiting for some new WoW loot to drool over, today Blizzard posted previews of season 13's "Tyrannical" PvP armor sets. Season 12 will be coming to an end on March 5, making the Tyrannical sets your new PvP goal. Though we have to say, the paladin set looks kind of dangerous, like you might put someone's eye out accidentally with those giant blades attached to your shoulders. (It reminds us of warrior's tier 2 Wrath set, which also seemed like tempting fate. What if you tripped?) So, PvP paladins, please be careful and try not to run with scissors -- or those huge shoulders -- okay?

For PvEers, Blizzard also has previews of tier 15, which will be arriving with patch 5.2 -- that is to say, soon. Thankfully, Blizzard has finally taken the preventive measure of putting bells on the priests so they can no longer sneak up on you. (Apologies to stealth-loving priests everywhere.)

And if that's not enough preview action, our friends at Wowhead also have Throne of Thunder boss drops from the PTR (if you're not seeing them, click to sort "By Boss"). Happy looting, everyone!

Patch 5.2: The Thunder King official trailer

We may not have gotten a trailer for patch 5.1, but we've certainly got a good one for patch 5.2! In a departure from earlier trailers, the trailer for 5.2 skips the narration and instead features some eloquent poetry courtesy of Lorewalker Cho. The trailer comes hot on the heels of the release candidate on the 5.2 PTR, suggesting that perhaps we should be expecting that patch next week. Pull on your troll-killing boots and prepare for a raid the likes of which we haven't seen since Ulduar. The Thunder King comes!

I'm awfully excited for this patch, and even more excited to see a new trailer from Blizzard. We haven't had a proper patch trailer since patch 4.3 -- and this particular trailer is a vast, vast improvement from the Hour of Twilight trailer in Cataclysm. What do you guys think? Are you ready for patch 5.2?

Patch 5.2 PTR: Patch notes update for Feb 25

Patch 52 PTR Patch notes update for Feb 25
As we draw closer to the release of patch 5.2, changes continue to be made. Another round of patch notes have just hit the 5.2 PTR. This time around, the list of changes to classes and quests is relatively small. However, there are a ton of updates for professions of all kinds -- and one interesting change to AoE spells and abilities.
  • The area damage cap is now 20 targets instead of 10.
  • Players that have a high fishing skill now have a chance to fish up new pets! The Pet Journal has clues on where these new pets can be found. Happy hunting -- er, fishing!
  • New raid and PvP patterns have been added for tailors. Tailors can find these new patters with the daily Imperial Silk cooldown.
  • Players can now participate in Pet Battle duels while in the Throne of Thunder, just in case you'd rather take a break from certain troll doom and instead focus on fluffy critters.
You can see the full list of patch notes at the official site, but if you'd just like a list of the new changes, follow after the break for a consolidated list.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Crushing the Council of Elders

Patch 52 PTR Crushing the Council of Elders

Thought you saw the last of Gara'jal in Mogushan Vaults, did you?

Yeah, so did I. Mogu'shan Vaults was merely a setback!

The Council of Elders is the third encounter in the Throne of Thunder. I surmise it's the whole leadership of the Troll empire right there looking to stop your raid team from progressing any further into the compound.

As you can guess, this encounter is the first council-type encounter of the raid. They'll have to handle the various abilities and spells that the Council is dishing out while slowly whittling them all down. They don't have a shared pool so you do you have your work cut out for you. Now there are going to be a ton of things going on but your raid should be able to pick up on the different abilities without too much of a hassle.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Patch notes update for Feb 19

Patch 52 PTR Patch notes update for Feb 19
Blizzard has posted another updated set of patch notes for the 5.2 PTR. This time around, the list of updates is relatively small, but there are still plenty of interesting tidbits to be found. Included are class changes for a few different classes, as well as some updates and additions to the list of features that will be available in patch 5.2.
  • Satchels obtained via the Raid Finder now have a chance to contain additional fun items. This includes Raid Finder versions of Normal and Heroic difficulty zone drops that were previously unobtainable from LFR difficulty.
  • Players of the same faction will get shared credit for Pandaria world bosses -- this includes Sha of Anger and Galleon, as well as the new world bosses in 5.2.
  • Buying the farm has officially been changed to reflect that you will be taking over the farm rather than purchasing it. Players must be exalted with the Tillers and have unlocked all 16 farm plots before this option will be made available.
You can see the full list of patch notes at the official site, but we've made life a little easier and just compiled a list of all of the changes after the break.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Mac OS X 10.6 no longer supported as of 5.2

Patch 52 PTR Mac OS X 106 no longer supported
Mac OS X 10.6 will no longer be supported in patch 5.2, so if you happen to be running under that operating system, you may want to consider upgrading. While World of Warcraft has long been known for running on ridiculously outdated computers, it has over time dropped support for older operating systems. Does this mean you can't play if you're running OS X 10.6? Nope -- but it means it will no longer be supported, so if your game suddenly stops functioning correctly with that operating system, there's not much to be done about it other than upgrading your OS.

There is no need to panic if you're currently running with said operating system, however -- your game isn't going to suddenly stop running tomorrow. Daxxari posted more information about the changes, as well as some helpful links to follow as a polite heads-up warning in advance, so players using this OS will have time to make any changes they need.

Daxxari
In the upcoming Patch 5.2: The Thunder King, players using Mac OS X 10.6 will be presented with a message stating that we will no longer support Mac OS X 10.6. During this time, you will be able to continue playing; however, Mac OS X 10.6 will no longer be supported. We recommend Mac users upgrade their systems to Mac OS X 10.7.5 (or newer) as soon as possible.

We are giving players advance notice of this change to ensure Mac users have enough time to update their operating systems in preparation for the release of Patch 5.2: The Thunder King. We will provide an additional update when we no longer provide technical support for Mac OS X 10.6. Mac OS X 10.7 and Mac OS X 10.8 will continue to be fully supported per the recently posted Mac OS Support policy here. For more Mac-related information and help, visit the support site.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Raid testing for Throne of Thunder continues

Patch 52 PTR Raid testing for Throne of Thunder continues
Raid testing for patch 5.2's Throne of Thunder raid continues tomorrow with testing of 10 player heroic content. For those wondering where all the 25 player testing is at, fear not -- there will likely be testing of 25-man normal modes at the end of this week. Keep your eyes peeled! Raid tests tomorrow will take place at 10:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 4 PM PST. If this is your first time testing, fear not -- your gear will be scaled to suit the encounter.

WoW Insider Throne of Thunder boss impressions

Raid Testing Schedule -- February 20
On Wednesday, February 20, we will be testing more raid encounters in the Throne of Thunder.

Note that we will likely be doing 25-player Normal testing (of many encounters) on Thursday and Friday. I'll post a schedule for those tomorrow.

Each encounter should be available at approximately the listed times below for all Public Test Realms.

Wednesday, February 20

Horridon - 10 Player Heroic
10:30 PST (13:30 EST, 19:30 CET)

Ji-Kun - 10 Player Heroic
13:30 PST (16:30 EST, 22:30 CET)

Primordius - 10 Player Heroic
16:00 PST (19:00 EST, 01:00 CET)

As always, this testing schedule is very fluid and subject to the realities of a beta environment. We might have to change the time of a testing session, change the boss being tested, or cancel a test entirely, due to bugs, server hardware issues, etc. Keep an eye on this forum for the latest information, and thank you in advance for testing and providing feedback.

Important Testing Notes

Q: How do I get into the raid zone?

A: At the northeastern edge of the swamp on the Thunder King's island, there is a Shado-Pan camp in a small cave. A sewer grate in this cave will take you directly to the zone-in point for the raid zone. (As more of the island unlocks, players will be able to access the main gate directly.)

Q: What gear do I use to test the raid?

A: As we did for Beta raid testing, we will be scaling players' gear inside the raid in order to facilitate testing. Gear will be scaled (up or down, as appropriate) for the purposes of testing the encounters, depending on difficulty and their location within the zone.

Patch 5.2's jewelcrafting changes and how to profit

There are going to be some new important recipes in 5.2 for Jewelcrafters: a "prism" style daily cooldown Serpent's Heart, and a no-cooldown recipe that allows you to craft the uncut meta gems, Primal Diamonds, out of gems and Spirits of Harmony. Kaliope reports that both recipes are world drops in Pandaria on the PTR, and shouldn't take long to farm.

Serpent's Prism would have been a better name

While the profession is better designed than ever (with much less waste for shufflers and far fewer items ending up at the vendor), the Serpent's Eyes that you get while prospecting Mists ore tend to pile up. They're used to make the 450 crafted jewelry, but the market for that isn't nearly as large as the supply of Serpent's Eyes. Many people end up making these into blues and disenchanting them so they're not wasted.

Now that all JCs will have the option of turning three Serpent's Eyes into a prism every day, that will provide an outlet for the Eyes that may be more profitable than the 450 blues. So far, only a few Prisms have been opened, but they seem to award a random blue gem, just like prisms from expansions past. Since it's on a daily cooldown, it's unlikely to be able to push down the price of blue gems much.

Is it worth using Spirits of Harmony?

The new Primal Diamond recipe has no cooldown, but requires Spirits of Harmony which are their own sort of cooldown. One criticism of Jewelcrafting has been that JCs have nothing except research and extremely low-liquidity mini-pets to spend their Spirits of Harmony on. Jewelcrafters generate Spirits as quickly as any other character, and in theory, it'd be nice to have a JC option to use them on. Especially seeing as how anyone doing daily research will have almost certainly finished learning all their cuts by now.

Patch 5.2 mounts and where to get them

Patch 52 mounts and where to get them
Patch 5.2 isn't just bringing new raids, it's also adding several new mounts to the game. For mount collectors, drake show-offs and people who like sitting on cool things, WoW Insider checked out how you can lay your hands on these sweet rides in patch 5.2.

Direhorn Mounts

The Golden Primal Direhorn is exhibited in the header image for your delectation, and he is available, just like his Crimson Primal Direhorn brother, from gaining exalted reputation with one of the new reputation grind factions -- the Kirin-Tor Offensive for the Alliance's Golden Primal Direhorn, and the Sunreaver Onslaught for the Horde's Crimson one.

There are several other Direhorn mounts available, all of these are Primordial rather than Primal, and come in four different colors: Amber Primordial Direhorn, Jade Primordial Direhorn, Cobalt Primordial Direhorn, and the Slate Primordial Direhorn.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Cache loot receives a buff

Patch 52 PTR Cache loot now far more appealing
It may seem silly to complain about having more currency to spend, but players have been by and large unhappy with the caches of gold rewarded as an alternative for loot when killing a boss in Mists of Pandaria. The argument does have some weight, however; and it's also been addressed before, in a slightly different fashion. When boxes that dropped from holiday bosses were viewed as disappointing because they contained nothing other than points, those boxes were adjusted to add actual items.

And let's face it -- when you're given a box of something, you really expect something to be in that box. Gold just doesn't cut it. Apparently Blizzard agreed with this sentiment, and the caches, deemed "failbags" by some, have been adjusted on the PTR to offer something far more substantial, according to a post by Bashiok on the official forums.

Bashiok
The change is still in for the failbags to ... not be fail. They'll have a chance to contain things like very valuable grey items (essentially randomizing the gold you get from the bags), LFR versions of non-boss loot, Spirits of Harmony, consumables, pets and mounts, and... maybe some other stuff I forgot. Lots of things! Opening them should have some anticipation and surprise now. :)

Trash drops, consumables, pets, and mounts? Count me in. This change ought to make getting that cache of items a heck of a lot more appealing to players. After all, if you get a surprise box of goodies, it ought to be full of fun!

Preparing for PvP in Patch 5.2

Preparing for PvP in Patch 52
Community Manager Daxxarri posted today with a lot of useful information to help players get to grips with the new PvP gearing methods in patch 5.2. There's some old information repeated, but if you weren't paying attention the first time around, here's his recap of the changes to the PvP gearing system:

Daxxarri
  • Rating requirements will be removed from PvP gear.
  • Malevolent Gladiator's gear will be available for purchase with Honor Points.
  • A new tier of Conquest Point gear will be added that becomes available once 27000 Conquest Points have been earned for the season.
  • Team Rating will gradually increase during the season for teams and players who continue to compete in PvP. This system is explained in the Mists of Pandaria PvP Dev Watercooler.
But that's not the most complicated bit that players have to prepare for. That arises when deciding what to do with conquest points now, and after patch 5.2. Unlike valor points, which are not being reset, conquest points will be converted to honor after the patch, with any that put the player's total honor points over 4,000 converted into gold. The upgrade vendor is also disappearing. This creates an interesting conundrum when it comes to gear choices.

Patch 5.2 PTR: PvP dailies, and additional rewards for PvE Dailies.

Patch 52 PTR PvE and PvP Dailies
The option to choose between PvE and PvP dailies was mentioned a while back in the first set of patch 5.2 PTR patch notes, and now they're finally live. There's no unlocking required, either, both factions simply need to complete their "Assault on..." scenario -- for the Alliance it's Shaol'Mara, for the Horde, Zeb'Tula. Both scenarios play out exactly the same, speak to either Jaina or Lor'themar to start the solo instance, and fly over the island with your scout, and go from there. I won't spoil it, but a little while and a lot of killing (the Alliance one was quite a bit harder than the Horde one for a fire mage) later, you'll leave the instance and find yourself in either Sunseeker Premontory or Violet Rise, depending on faction.

Once you've unlocked the faction base, you'll need to seek out the Assignment Map to choose your variety of daily quest.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Killing Throne of Thunder's Ji-Kun

Patch 52 PTR JiKun
Rejoining Lore from TankSpot and his guild Months Behind, Ji-Kun was our next target. Hers is an interesting fight, which somewhat split the group's opinions, leaving us undecided on whether it was genius or gimmick.

Rather like Alysrazor in Firelands, Ji-Kun has a mechanic involving feathers. Actually, she has several mechanics involving feathers, if you include Quills, but the main one I'm thinking of here, indeed the main mechanic of the fight as it is intended, is Daedalian Wings. The tooltip isn't enormously useful here, but this is the buff received by players when they loot feathers from killing off the Hatchlings in one of the nests. Ji-Kun is positioned on a very elevated platform in the center of a circular room, with five other platforms positioned around the edge, below her level, and four more platforms positioned above her.

These platforms are the key to this fight, which, apart from their mechanic, is, frankly, rather dull. Some of your party will be traveling to and from the lower platforms, while most will likely remain on the upper.
