Encrypted Text: Rogue basics in patch 5.2

argent
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any questions or article suggestions you'd like to see covered here.

With one glance at the notes, you'll see that rogues are obviously the class getting the most updates in the upcoming patch. There's an unusual number of changes coming our way. I'm used to a few terse sentences under the brittle yellow Rogue heading in the patch notes. Currently, we're facing paragraphs of tweaks, a handful of completely new abilities, and even redesigns of old techniques.

None of the changes should affect our core DPS mechanics. Our rotations are going to stay exactly the same, our weapon and poison changes won't be changing, and we'll want the same stats on our gear. Combat and subtlety rogues were both slightly buffed, but all three specs should be competitive in PvE. Many of the changes should significantly increase our stock in PvP, via both offensive and defensive improvements.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Patch notes update for Jan. 30

Patch 52 PTR Patch notes update for Jan 30
Blizzard just posted an updated set of patch notes for the 5.2 PTR. Included in the latest round of updates are the continuation of Wrathion's legendary quest chain, some class changes, a whole mess of Pet Battle changes, and a few interesting tweaks to LFR that might just make that issue of players dropping groups a little less likely to occur.
  • To encourage LFR groups to stick around, each time a Raid Finder group wipes on a boss fight, all players will get a stacking buff that increases health, damage, and healing done by 5%. This stacks up to 10 times.
  • Lorewalker Cho has two new tales to tell -- Dagger in the Dark, and A Little Patience. As of 5.2, both factions will be able to complete both scenarios. No more faction limit!
  • Characters that have attained titles from the Rated Battleground system (Centurion, Knight-Champion, High Warlord, Grand Marshal, etc) will now be able to purchase old PvP items requiring those titles.
You can see the full list of patch notes at the official site, but we've made life a little easier and just compiled a list of all of the changes after the break.

Lichborne: Tier 15 set bonuses and other death knight changes for patch 5.2

Lichborne Tier 15 set bonuses and other death knight changes for patch 52 TUESDAY
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Lichborne for blood, frost, and unholy death knights. In the post-Cataclysm era, death knights are no longer the new kids on the block. Let's show the other classes how a hero class gets things done.

In the weeks since the patch 5.2 PTR has been up, death knight changes have held pretty steady. The announced unholy changes have stayed in place, and so far seem to be working out much as expected, making the spec a little easier to handle and overall promising to put unholy in a better place once patch 5.2 comes out. That said, there have been a few other tweaks added, as well as the revealing of the tier 15 raid gear set bonuses. Today, we'll dig into these changes and see how they're stacking up.

Tier 15 death knight DPS bonuses
I'm going to be honest, I'm a little bit in love with the current 2 piece DPS bonus, if only for the flavor. A few columns back, I mentioned that one of my wildest dream updates for death knights would be a Wild Imps style ghoul summoning, and the 2 piece tier 15 bonus is sort of probably the closest we'll come to that. We'll need more solid parses to see if stacks up damage bonus wise, but in flavor, I'm pretty excited for it. The biggest issue here may be if the summoned pets end up dying prematurely to mobs before they can do their damage.

Totem Talk: Restoration tier 15 set bonus update on the Patch 5.2 PTR

Totem Talk Restoration tier 15 set bonus update on PTR Tuesday
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement and restoration shaman. Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration, brought to you by Joe Perez (otherwise known as Lodur from World of Matticus and content creation at InternetDragons.TV), shows you how.

Patch 5.2 is still a very hot topic right now, and with very good reason. The content that we're gearing up to enjoy is quite extensive. Whether you love dailies and are looking forward to expanding your catalog of places to grind, new pets to tame on your hunter, battle pets that are coming soon or the epic raiding with fights like Lei Shen. Reputation changes and new legendary meta gems are also on the list of changes that are incoming.

It is a big patch, for sure, and with all that new content comes near constant testing and tweaking of all the features to make sure they work as intended; and with that testing, changes are made and classes undergo changes whether to their gear or their abilities during this time.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Breaking Jin'rokh the Breaker

Patch 52 PTR Breaking Jin'rokh the Breaker
I headed back to the patch 5.2 PTR recently with Lore from TankSpot, and members of his guild Months Behind to test the first boss of the Throne of Thunder, Jin'rokh the Breaker. We had an entertaining time, at first, as can often be the case on the PTR. The developers had ported all the testers into the wrong part of the raid, so we set off exploring, and found a geyser that transported us all up to Lei Shen, who, while he happily continued his RP, refused to engage us in combat. We couldn't get to Jin'rokh at first, but a swift disband and regroup secured us entry into his room.

Jin'rokh is the first boss of the new raid, and as such has relatively straightforward mechanics, certainly compared to Lei Shen. Again, I was on my goblin restoration shaman, so view the fight from a healer's perspective.

Jin'rokh's fight proceeds in repeating, short phases. He engages and beats up your tank for a short while, putting out very healable damage. Jin'rokh will place a stacking debuff on the tank called Static Wound, which increases damage taken from melee strikes more and more as it builds. This is apparently designed to force a tank swap.

Patch 5.2 Prep: Get ahead of the game

Isle of Thunder
Patch 5.2 will bring new dailies, new factions, another raid, and a kitchen sink. It's pretty much a super patch. With so many additions, you may start to feel overwhelmed at the thought of class changes on top of new grinds -- and you know, pets and stuff. Never fear, we're here to help you prepare! Before we get too deep into this, remember that everything we've learned about patch 5.2 is from the PTR. Things can change!
  • Farm (or buy) Ghost Iron. Both blacksmithing and engineering will see new unique crafting materials similar to the scribe's Scroll of Wisdom -- Lightning Steel Ingot and Stabilized Lightning Source, respectively. Both require 10 Ghost Iron bars, so snag some Ghost Iron now, and use some of it to transmute into Living Steel. Many new crafted items will require it.
  • Get ahead in your Wrathion quests. In 5.2, Wrathion will ask for 40 Trillium Bars in a quest on the way to the legendary meta gems, so start gathering the ore now to get a head start.
  • Get your Tillers rep to Exalted and unlock all plots. Although farming may not be appealing to everyone, Tillers rep is one of the easiest to max out. At Exalted, we'll be able to use work orders to gain rep in patch 5.2.

Patch 5.2 PTR: PvP Interface gets a makeover

Patch 52 PTR PvP Interface gets a makeover
On the patch 5.2 PTR, the PvP interface has had a much-needed makeover. You can see the results above. The revamp has made the system far more intuitive to use, and brought it in line with the PvE queue screen.

Clicking one of the three lines on the left-hand side will bring up the various options available to earn that currency, or, in the case of War Games, a brief explanation on how this under-used feature works, and how to set up a War Game. Perhaps this will result in more players using them, but many still lament the absence of a skirmish system, and there doesn't seem to be a gap for it at present!

Moving to the right-hand side, the dice icon next to the Random Battleground is how players will choose which battlegrounds to blacklist. This could be considered an improvement on the current interface, but it's still not entirely obvious that that's what the icon does. In order to queue for specific battlegrounds other than Wintergrasp and Tol Barad, it is necessary to choose them from the drop-down menu at the top right of the screen.

Patch 5.2: Tier set names

Patch 52 Tier set names
The new tier sets for patch 5.2 finally have names -- well, most of the sets do. Wowhead managed to dig up the names for all of the tier 15 models, with the exception of the rogue t15 set. While rogue set items are currently using the t14 name, all other t15 sets have been changed over. However, the models for all of the sets are nearly complete, and some sets have some pretty neat animation on the shoulder models.
  • Death Knight Battleplate/Plate of the All-Consuming Maw. The shoulders for this piece are two sets of jaws that occasionally open and flick their tongues in the air.
  • Druid Armor/Regalia/Battlegear/Vestments of the Haunted Forest. This model features small fireflies that dart around the branches on the shoulders.
  • Hunter Battlegear of the Saurok Stalker.
  • Mage Regalia of the Chromatic Mage.
  • Monk Fire-Charm Armor/Battlegear/Vestments.
  • Paladin Battlegear/Plate/Vestments of the Lightning Emperor. This set flickers with blue lightning. Please note that the model for this set doesn't quite appear to be complete.
  • Priest Vestments/Regalia of the Exorcist. The hood for this model also appears to include a translucent veil over the eyes. Neat!
  • Rogue Battlegear of the Thousandfold Blades. This is a placeholder name for now.
  • Shaman Battlegear/Regalia/Vestments of the Spiritbreaker.
  • Warlock Regalia of the Thousand Hells.
  • Warrior Battleplate/Plate of the Last Mogu.
Take a look through our gallery for a closer look at all of the t15 sets, or head over to Wowhead and use the modelviewer there for a look at the unique animations.

Patch 5.2: Work orders allow reputation gain through your farm

Patch 52 Work orders allow reputation gain through your farm
Work orders are in in the patch 5.2 PTR, allowing players to gain reputation with other factions by farming. You can see Matticus' character here being offered several work orders from other factions. Wowhead has datamined many of the quests, indicating that, for now at least, they are available purely for factions added in patch 5.0.4 and patch 5.1.

It's no great surprise that the new factions aren't included in these work orders, to be able to earn reputation for the new factions by farming would be rather strange when they have only just appeared. There doesn't, at present, appear to be any prior reputation requirement to get these work order quests, but you do have to have bought your farm in order to receive the work orders, so a considerable dose of Tillers work is required.

Edit: A blue post has clarified that you no longer have to buy the farm to receive and complete work orders, but you will need to be exalted with the Tillers and have all plots unlocked.

Once you've bought the farm You'll need to farm specific vegetables for specific factions, so, for example, the Golden Lotus want White Turnips. There's two quests for each faction, so continuing to look at the Golden Lotus, the first quest is to plant 8 White Turnip Seeds, and the second is to harvest 8 Ripe White Turnips, resulting in 40 White Turnips. Only the second part of the quest awards reputation, 300 at the moment, but both currently award 236,000 XP.

The general consensus seems to be that any way to gain reputation is a bonus, but these don't seem particularly fast. Do they strike a good balance?

Patch 5.2 PTR: Elder Charms of Good Fortune now stack to 20

Patch 52 PTR Elder Charms of Good Fortune now stack to 20
Well, it seems like fortune is smiling on us. Perhaps anticipating our running the daily quests for the Kirin Tor Offensive/Sunreaver Onslaught (which can potentially reward an Elder Charm via specific quests), the amount of Elder Charms of Good Fortune that can stack in our currency tab has been increased. On the live realms you can have a maximum of 10 Elder Charms. On the PTR you can have a max of 20.

This is a pretty nice change for people who like to run dailies and would want to move more of those lesser charms out, or even for someone who wants to have as many shots as possible at an upgrade while raiding. I know I'm looking forward to it.

Patch 5.2 PTR: More hats!

Roll up, roll up, Darkmoon hats on the PTR
Perculia of Wowhead has been very busy indeed dealing with the denizens of the Darkmoon Faire on the patch 5.2 PTR. Her hot topic of today is hats, including this fetching headgear in the header image. This is the Darkmoon Top Hat, a recently discovered headpiece which grants the wearer a 10% buff to reputation and experience gain that lasts one hour. Quite apart from that, it looks marvelously fetching, don't you think?

Upon using said hat, as Perculia adeptly displays in the image above, the wearer will briefly experience the hat's built in firework display, which will sporadically reappear throughout the hour it lasts for. Note that we said using, not equipping, because the wearer only appears to be wearing the hat. There is no need to remove your existing hat, this hat is naught but an hour-long illusion. Alas, the hat is consumed upon use, but fear not, a fresh hat can be purchased from Gelvas Grimegate for the princely sum of ten Darkmoon Prize Tickets. The hat can also drop from the Darkmoon Game Prize awarded by the Darkmoon daily quests, such as The Humanoid Cannonball.

In other Darkmoon hat news, Wowhead has also datamined the Darkmoon Fishing Cap. While it doesn't sound nearly as dapper as the Darkmoon Top Hat, the Fishing Cap grants the wearer an additional five fishing skill, and has a very handy on-use effect, summoning a pool of Shipwrecked Debris -- the Darkmoon fishing pool. Gone are the days of searching for fishing pools, now they come to you, as long as the Darkmoon Faire is in town, and you don't mmind waiting an hour between pools. On second thought, your fishing may be more time-efficient if you do also search for pools. The source of the Fishing Cap is, as yet, unknown...

Patch 5.2 PTR: An evening with the new boss Horridon

I had the pleasure of heading over to Thunder Isle last night to take on the new patch 5.2 boss Horridon with Lore from TankSpot and his guild Months Behind. I was playing my PTR goblin restoration shaman, and thought I'd fill you all in on some of my observations from this new encounter. Horridon is a very add-heavy fight. The first few phases, and indeed the final battle, focus heavily on adds, which enter the arena through several doors. Lore's video, above, shows off the fight from his perspective of tanking, while my angle was that of a healer.

Horridon himself puts out fairly spiky damage on the tanks at first, hitting them with a stacking debuff that increases damage taken from his primary attack, Triple Puncture. Horridon also does a Double Swipe, shows pretty clearly by a red ring as well as two conical areas in front and behind him. He will periodically charge random members and then immediately Double Swipe, so keep a watchful eye on his position and target.

The adds initially come out of the doors at the side of the arena, currently the doors and adds are a bit mixed up, but as soon as the first set, the Farraki, begin to appear, the tanks should swap on Horridon and the new off-tank needs to pick up the adds. From a healing perspective, the Farraki's Blazing Sunlight is an additional concern, the effect stacks and seemed to chain to nearby players, as well as dealing heavy damage, so dispels were a priority.

Patch 5.2 PTR: The voice-files of Ra-Den

If it needs to be said, clicking on that video will play the voice files for Ra-Den, the heroic only boss from the upcoming Throne of Thunder raid. If you're attempting to avoid spoilers, don't listen to it.

I'm going to discuss the sound files now, so if you don't want spoilers, don't read any further.

What we can take from these files is that tens of thousands of years sealed away after Lei Shen's betrayal has done very little for Ra-Den's sanity. He clearly wants to share some of that long suffering with the first people who find him... which looks to be the first group to get past Lei Shen, unfortunately for them. Even more interesting is what Ra-Den has to say after he fights mortal heroes. I'll leave that up to you to listen to, but it has dire implications for the future.

Things are gonna get interesting.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Lore spoilers, an entire post full of them

First up, let me reiterate what the title of this post indicated: there will be many spoilers for patch 5.2 in this post. If you don't want spoilers for patch 5.2, then I suggest you don't read any further, because that's what this post is going to be. Before I get into the spoilers, though, I should in good conscience link to some posts Anne Stickney and myself did on the subject of the mogu and their true nature, and the secrets of the Vale of Eternal Blossoms and Pandaria itself. Why do I do this? Well, if you continue on with this post, you will find out.

From this point on, there be nothing but spoilers

The folks over at Wowhead have mined up a heaping helping of audio files for this new patch, and man, the story is advancing.
