Patch 5.4.7 PTR: Is this the level 90 boost gear?

Level 90 boost gear
Our friends over at Wowhead have datamined some gear from the patch 5.4.7 PTR. Included are full sets of ilvl483 armor, cloaks, jewelry, and weapons. The source of this gear hasn't been confirmed yet, but it seems like the perfect starter gear for a brand new level 90. It's sufficient to get you started in the first few LFRs or random PvP battlegrounds at least. You can view all of these new items at the links below:
Remember that this is datamined information and nothing has been confirmed. However, it does seem likely once you consider similar quality greens are given to boosted level 80 characters from the Scroll of Resurrection promotion. We'll be sure to keep you updated as the PTR progresses.

Patch 5.4.7 PTR: Timeless Isle weapons go to 489 ilvl

The Timeless Isle is currently by far the best way to gear up your new level 90s, although perhaps not for long, apart from its weapons. While the remainder of the gear you get from the Timeless Isle is ilvl 496, as I'm sure you all know, the weapons are only 476. While it's likely because of the perhaps misguided notion that weapons are so important that they ought to be harder to get, it's a pain. If the rest of the catch-up gear is being handed to players so easily, why not weapons too?

Well, on the 5.4.7 PTR, there's been a shift in the philosophy. The weapons are now 489 ilvl, so 13 higher than they were. And what's more, this change is also being applied to all weapons already bought. So if you're currently wielding a Timeless Isle weapon, it'll get a free 13-ilvl upgrade come 5.4.7. Considering the not-insubstantial 20,000 Timeless Coin cost of the weapons, you'd think they could match the ilvl of the rest of the gear, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

However, if all remains equal between now and the release of 5.4.7, it will probably be easier to farm Honor via one of the many PvE-based methods to do so, and just buy a 522 honor weapon.

Patch 5.4.7: PvP gear will be ilevel 550

Senior PvP Designer Brian Holinka has confirmed via Twitter that PvP gear in season 15 will be ilvl 550.

And just in case, like me, you weren't 100% convinced he was serious, Community Representative Lore also tweeted confirming the item level was correct. Does this mean that the season is imminent?

Is this good or bad news? Depends what you play the most. If you're a PvE-er this is not such great news. Double-upgraded Flex gear is now 2 item levels behind Conquest gear. But more relevant is honor gear. What this means is that, if you're starting from scratch, the best way to hit a higher item level is no longer to farm Timeless Isle. It's to kill rares in Krasarang, do dungeons to get JP to convert and buy honor gear, which will likely be 522 or 524 ilvl, or to do PvP.

No player with a preference for PvP or PvE likes to feel they have to do the other to gear up. While this PvP gear won't have the PvE set bonuses or similar, and may not be superior to Flex gear as a result, it could still be perceived as such by someone focused on ilvl alone.
