Breakfast Topic: What's your favorite quest mechanic?

Breakfast Topic What's your favorite quest mechanic
Remember when everyone loved to hate The Oculus? Group members dropped like flies the moment some hapless noob intimated not having flown a drake before. Or jousting in the Argent Tournament -- ah, yes, another quest mechanic that united many players with the burning passion of unmitigated hatred.

The thing is, some players like varied quest mechanics, even flying things and jousting at things. They like a change of pace from MMO standards such as Kill 10 Rats and the Fed Ex breadcrumb delivery (or in Blizzard's case, anything to do with poop). Me, I usually resent the intrusion. I prefer to play my character, galloping around the hills to find things and using my entire arsenal of spells to peek, tweak, and then slay everything in my path. I must admit, though, that Mists of Pandaria could be swaying me from this stoic path. While I'm adamantly not a fan of the quests that put you in the shoes of the quest giver and his saga, the general variety of quest mechanics has been ... distracting. Refreshing. Dare I go so far as to even say they're downright fun? A little variety is turning out to possibly be a good thing.

(I said "a little." I still want to play my character. Harrumph.)

Do you enjoy playing a variety of quest mechanics as you move through WoW's storylines, or do you prefer to stay in your character's own skin with your own spells and abilities? What are your favorite quest types? Which would you be just as happy to never encounter again?

The Empire of Zul'drak issue resolved with a new quest

A lot of players aiming for the Loremaster achievement were hitting a snag in Zul'Drak. Because of one or two quests that were only able to be done while on a single questline, a lot of players that missed it initially were blocked from going back to it and were stuck at 99/100 quests. Patch 3.0.8 brings some great news for those people: A new quest has been added to the zone so you can finish your achievement.

Chronicler To'kini in the quest hub Zim'Torga now offers the quest Tails Up, which as of this posting doesn't appear on either Wowhead or WoWDB yet. It's another of Blizzard's awkward humor quests, though luckily it's not poop related. Genitalia is the name of the game this time around. The Chronicler wants to bring some Zul'Drak wildlife back to Zandalar to study, but he specifically wants females from you. So you pump the beasts full of tranquilizers, do what you see in the picture to the right there, and you pray it's a female.

Get out the scooper, time to take the felhound for a walk

Udderpants of Twisting Nether makes a really great point on the forums: We've braved an entire civilization of trolls (and the avatar they worship), we've brought dragon heads back to our cities, and we've slaughtered the opposing faction until our leaders deemed us worthy enough to be given the best gear-- and yet we're consigned to picking up felhound poop in Outland. Can't say I was prepared for that.

Which isn't to say that I don't like the quest. One of the things I was hoping for in Outland was a little more quest variety, and while the actual clicking is still there (that gear does an amazing number of things), at least there's a little more story-- I also like the quest (also Horde) in which you find out that a Blood Elf at Falcon Watch is being cheated on by her lover.

But still-- poop? I've got over 400 spell damage, fer chrissakes! Neth says, in her almost infinite wisdom (she did have a little bit of trouble explaining away the honor nerf way back when) says it's to teach us humility, which all great heroes should have in-- excuse me on this one-- spades. I guess before you get to clean out all the crap in Karahzan and the Black Temple, everyone's gotta pick up a little poop.
