Diablo 3 shares a first look at Pandemonium

In anticipation of Diablo III's release next Tuesday, Blizzard has posted an in-depth look at the final level of the first expansion for the game. Pandemonium was once the center of the Eternal Conflict between angels and demons, home to the Worldstone before it was stolen away by Inarius and Lilith, who then created the world known as Sanctuary. After the Worldstone was removed, the battles that raged across Pandemonium slowly came to a halt.

Although the Pandemonium Fortress appeared as the base of operations back in Diablo II, players never really got to experience the depths of what Pandemonium had to offer. Now home to Malthael, the main villain of Reaper of Souls, players will be able to experience the zone like never before. Check out the official site for more lore surrounding the final level of Reaper of Souls, as well as a glimpse into the design behind it. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls arrives next Tuesday, March 25.

This special edition of Know Your Lore presents an overview of the lore of the Diablo games and their setting, the world of Sanctuary. Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft. Enjoy this week's diversion into the world of Diablo III.

The Diablo games are very different from anything in the Warcraft setting, a far more black-and-white morality played out in endless cosmic war between absolute forces of order and righteousness opposing evil and chaos. This war, the Great or Eternal Conflict, is so massive in scale and scope that it can almost be said to be endless. The war predates the world of Sanctuary, the realm where mortal men and women are born and live out their lives. Indeed, Sanctuary itself was created by a rogue angel and his demonic lover and ally as a place to find an end to the war.

But before the conflict, before the universe itself existed, there was only Anu. Anu existed as a pearl, a central point which contained all evil and all good, all possibilities and all dualities contained within its mirrored surface. Yet Anu felt imperfect in its duality and sought purity in the rejection of its negative aspects, casting them aside to become a being of glittering diamond -- a perfected warrior. Yet what Anu rejected, his cast-off impurities themselves became perfection of a dark bent, forming the monstrous Tathamet. This seven-headed dragon declared war on the glittering Anu, who in turn sought to destroy that which he had cast out of himself.

Encrypted Text: Examining the rogue's assassin ancestry

If you start looking into the history of the rogue class, you end up reaching several dead ends. The reason is that a rogue who's easy to track or trace isn't much of a rogue at all. We specialize in disappearing, which makes rogue family trees notoriously difficult to map. Garona Halforcen is often considered to be the mother of the rogue class, executing one of the earliest and most daring acts of assassination and regicide in Azeroth's history.

The truth is that if we want to find our spiritual beginnings, we have to look back even further than Garona and even further away than Azeroth. The true ancestor of today's rogue class first found life eons ago, in another realm, known only as Sanctuary. There, the assassin class stood against the three Prime Evils, defeating the Burning Hell's greatest powers with elegance and subterfuge. The rogues of WoW were inspired by the assassins of Diablo II, and that influence can still be felt today.

Encrypted Text: How to run the Molten Front

Varian Wrynn isn't happy. He sent his best and brightest men to the Molten Front to assist the Guardians of Hyjal in invading the Firelands, but all he received back was a stack of casualty alerts. The cause of death on each report was the same: several deep dagger wounds. As Varian assigned more soldiers to the Molten Front, he simply received more body bags in return. Varian confronted Garrosh about the issue, claiming that the Warchief was breaking their peace accord by using assassins in the Molten Front. Garrosh feigned ignorance and promised Varian that he'd find the perpetrator and have him properly handled. The next day, I received a post from Garrosh himself. It was brief: "Lok'tar, brother!"

I've read several articles that claim that world PVP is dead and has been for a long time. The truth is that world PVP is alive; it has simply transitioned into a seasonal event. With the release of the Molten Front quest hub, Blizzard's developers directed a ton of level 85 players into a zone where they can't use their flying mounts. If that doesn't count as revitalizing world PVP, then I don't know what does. I spend every spare moment I have plunging my daggers into the questers' ribcages. There's a plethora of targets available, with new enemies zoning in every minute. World PVP hasn't been this active since the Isle of Quel'Danas, and that means I have a lot of catching up to do.

Patch 4.2 Daily Quests: Punting Season and Echoes of Nemesis

Patch 4.2 is bringing one of the most ambitious daily quest hubs ever to World of Warcraft, as players dive into Ragnaros' fiery domain. Before players enter the Firelands, however, there is work to be done in the Regrowth, an area of Mount Hyjal under siege by Ragnaros' minions and the Druids of the Flame. Are you a bad enough dude to repel invaders from the Firelands?

Players begin at the Sanctuary of Malorne, where Matoclaw, Malfurion, and Mylune offer players quests to fend off invaders, save the denizens of Hyjal, and team up with the ancients once again. Today, we're going to talk about one of the most fun dailies since the creation of bombing runs back in The Burning Crusade: turtle punting.

In recent news, yet another Sanctuary talent bug has been hotfixed. I'm really starting to get annoyed at this wonderful talent that keeps us crit-immune. This time, the issue was that it would de-talent itself for players under level 30 when they logged off, zoned, changed continents, etc. This should now be fixed, for those of you who've been leveling new tauren paladins as protection.

As far as the column this week goes, we're talking about addons. From holy power tracking to gear swapping to buff reminders (like the one shown above), there are a lot of things that can make our day-to-day dungeon running a lot easier. These aren't the only addons for each solution (and I hope our commenters will point out any good ones I missed), but they're a few of the more popular, and each has its own features and limitations.

My fellow tankadins, I know we haven't talked in a while. I've been talking to the ret pallies lately, but I haven't forgotten about you. The main reason is that I kind of swapped over to retribution during that time period where the devs were mucking with Holy Shield so much, and it was a little more consistent to swap over to something else during that time period. I even had my newish tanking gear back on while playing on the beta lately.

However, a lot has changed since we last spoke, and it would behoove us all to get down to business. Tanking as you know it, with our fairly static rotation of 96969, is gone. Divine Plea's refreshing with melee hits is also gone. Also, we now have another resource bar to watch, in addition to mana. Be not afraid. There are answers beyond.

Spiritual Guidance: Back to the beta

In 2015, while testing out the latest Keepers of Time expansion, Blizzard Executive Fox Van Allen accidentally ganks his past self, undoing his own existence by causing himself to reroll paladin. Now, stuck in the year 2008, Fox must find a way to undo his mistake or risk losing everything. To do this, he tracks down the only person he knows: Dawn Moore. Unfortunately, she's never heard of him, WoW.com or Spiritual Guidance, and would much rather PvP than heal.

I've come to think of the Cataclysm beta as a disease. Each week it spreads further among the general populace while simultaneously mutating into a newer, stronger version of its former self. As the resident healer, it's my duty to try to control and contain the situation by applying my latest analysis, but overall the beta is a very resistant infection and my normal approaches are continually being overtaken. Still, I stand vigilant and celebrate my small victories; I will not leave you ill-informed, my fellow priests!

The sound of crickets fill the silence.

If you saw my column last week, you'll notice that I've been less than thrilled with the way the protection tree had been progressing in the beta. Sure, things have been getting better, but it has felt as if the whole tree is fairly unsettled. With the latest build, we're finally starting to see things get a little smoother and the mechanics to make a little bit more sense. Keeping Holy Shield up is easier than in previous builds, and a lot of depth to the types of strategies we can have while tanking has greatly improved. Also, our mastery bonus has been official revealed.

I'm going to use the same type of disclaimer that I did on the ret talents article. These may not be the talents we'll end up seeing when the expansion hits, but they're getting there. Some talents will look pretty close to how they exist currently, while others have absolutely nothing to do with their current versions. Let's go take a look.

The Light and How to Swing It: Retribution and protection paladins in the Cataclysm beta

It's here! Cataclysm has moved from the alpha stage into the closed beta stage. The non-disclosure agreement is no longer in effect and all of the news sites are going crazy with information overload. At first glance, not much has changed, but a lot of little things have been tweaked and I have a feeling a lot more changes are in store for the paladin class throughout the course of the beta. Some things, like the Guardian of Ancient Kings that I used a reader screenshot to fake above, just don't appear to be coded yet (and with its complexity, it will probably be a while).

No sanctuary cities in Cataclysm

We heard about this last year at BlizzCon but Zarhym has reaffirmed that Cataclysm will not feature any new capital cities that are considered a sanctuary. There will not be a new Shattrath or Dalaran. I personally believe its safe to assume that the present faction capital cities will see a few facelifts. Maybe a small cave in or something at Ironforge? Perhaps a toppled tower in Stormwind?

I'll be happier for not having to share city space with Horde players. Actually, now that I think about it, no more "Lagaran!" Perhaps I won't disconnect every once in a while when I fly in to the city during peak hours. For me, I'll be running circles around the Stormwind bank steps. But since Dalaran has portals to all the major cities, it wouldn't surprise me if it continues to be the major transportation hub of choice for players looking to travel around the world.

Season 4 Brutal Gladiator gear guide


Now that Season 4 has finally arrived, it would probably be good to take a look at the Arena gear you'll be purchasing with all those stored Arena points. Even though most people have concurred that the new Brutal Gladiator gear is appropriately brutally ugly, a lot of the pieces are excellent and many players will need to purchase them in order to stay competitive in the latest, harshest Arena season.

Most of the Brutal Gladiator armor sets and equipment require personal ratings in order for players to be able to purchase them, so the new Season 4 gear will not flood the community the same way past seasons did. Even Honor-bought items such as bracers, boots, and rings will require participation in the Arenas in order for players to qualify for purchasing them.

We've put together a review of all the Brutal Gladiator armor sets for you to review, with a brief analysis of each piece and an assessment of whether it's worth the Arena points and the bother to grind for the personal ratings. We've also compared Season 4 gear with their equivalent Vengeful Gladiator pieces so you can tell at a glance how much of an improvement each piece is from its predecessor. Brutal Gladiator's Sanctuary


The Brutal Gladiator's Sanctuary is the armor set for Feral Druids. It is a dragonhide, or leather armor usable only by Druids and is usually matched with Guardian's Dragonhide armor pieces. The armor set can be purchased from Big Zokk Torquewrench in Netherstorm and Ontokk Shatterhorn in Shattrath City. The matching Guardian items may be purchased from Doris Volanthius in the Hall of Legends and Lieutenant Tristia in the Champion's Hall.

Brutal Gladiator's Dragonhide Gloves
The Brutal Gladiator armor piece for the hands are the cheapest and easiest Season 4 Arena gear to obtain. With no personal rating requirements, most players will be able to purchase this piece and is the Arena gear likely to be most widespread as soon as the season begins. The glove bonus to Maim is one of the best of all PvP gloves. The gloves have the following stats (number in parentheses are the improvements over its Season 3 equivalent):
368 Armor (+25)
+35 Strength (+4)
+36 Agility (+4)
+48 Stamina (+4)
+25 Intellect (+4)
+13 Hit (+4)
+22 Resilience (+0)
Causes Maim to interrupt spellcasting and prevent any spell from that school from being cast for 3 secs.
Classes: Druid
WoW Insider says: Although Feral Druids have traditionally been underrepresented in Arenas, these gloves should be freebies. Incidentally, many Feral Druids also find these gloves excellent for tanking. The armor is higher than the Kodohide or Wyrmhide gloves, but relatively low compared to PvE gloves. Some Druids find that the Resilience and +Hit more than make up for it.


Brutal Gladiator's Dragonhide Legguards
The leg armor possesses a personal rating requirement of 1550, which isn't too difficult to obtain, even for Feral Druids. While not as accessible as the gloves, the leg armor is highly visible on a character and is also likely to be a popular purchase, even at 1875 Arena points. The legguards have the following stats (number in parentheses are the improvements over its Season 3 equivalent):
478 Armor (+35)
+40 Strength (+4)
+41 Agility (+4)
+61 Stamina (+6)
+34 Intellect (+4)
+17 Hit (+5)
+18 Critical Strike (+5)
+29 Resilience (+0)
84 Armor Penetration (+0)
Classes: Druid
WoW Insider says: The lack of sockets mean that the only customization that can be done will be through Tailoring or Leatherworking enchants. Hit rating, armor penetration, and other good stats make this leg armor almost as good a purchase as the chest piece.


Brutal Gladiator's Dragonhide Tunic

With three sockets, the chestpiece is the most customizable Arena armor piece, and is the next best purchase after the gloves. In PvE, the chest armor is traditionally a drop from the final boss in a series (Magtheridon drops Tier 4 chest token, Kael'thas drops Tier 5 chest token, Illidan drops Tier 6 chest token, etc.). Arenas are different in this regard, but the item level of the chest is identical to PvE chest pieces. Sunwell Plateau breaks from tradition in that the final boss, Kil'jaeden, does not drop chest tokens or armor. However, the Brutal Gladiator chest armor is equivalent to the drops from Entropius and is the best combination of cost and restriction among all the armor pieces. The tunic has the following stats (number in parentheses are the improvements over its Season 3 equivalent):
569 Armor (+40)
+34 Strength (+4)
+36 Agility (+5)
+61 Stamina (+7)
+26 Intellect (+4)
+16 Hit (+4)
+23 Critical Strike (4)
+26 Resilience (+0)
84 Armor Penetration (+0)

Socket Bonus: +4 Resilience Rating

WoW Insider says: The best Brutal Gladiator purchase outside of the gloves, some Druids will use this to tank even in raids, as some Druids will take Resilience to compensate for the reduced armor. Because of its PvE equivalent, obtaining the Brutal Gladiator chest armor is almost like killing Entropius in Sunwell Plateau. Well, ok not really, but if you don't raid, that's about as close to a raid drop as you're going to get.


Brutal Gladiator's Dragonhide Helm
The helm is very likely the last Brutal Gladiator armor piece that many players will obtain. With the shoulders at an extremely prohibitive 2200, most players will only manage 4/5 of Season 4. Feral Druids can conceivably achieve 1700 for this helm, which costs the same as the chest and leg armor pieces. With a personal rating attached to it, the Brutal Gladiator helm might be one helm graphic that players would like to leave on. It is also identical in model to the pieces that drop off Kil'jaeden in Sunwell Plateau. The helm has the following stats (number in parentheses are the improvements over its Season 3 equivalent):
461 Armor (+32)
+36 Strength (+4)
+35 Agility (+4)
+64 Stamina (+7)
+28 Intellect (+5)
+17 Hit (+5)
+31 Critical Strike (+4)
+25 Resilience (+0)
84 Armor Penetration (+0)

Socket Bonus: +4 Resilience Rating

WoW Insider says: More than most PvP pieces, the Dragonhide set works very well for PvE, and many Druids can make use of the helm, particularly for DPS. It's one of the best cat DPS helmets in the game, so Feral Druids would do well to strive for the 1700 personal rating.


Brutal Gladiator's Dragonhide Spaulders

The 2200 personal ratings requirement for the shoulders are almost Gladiator-level for most Battlegroups, and will likely be a very rare sight in most realms. It's uncertain how many Feral Druids will be able to achieve that rating in Season 4. It is the cheapest item after the gloves, but it is also the most difficult to get. Blizzard's reasoning for this is that the shoulders are the most "visually impacting" armor piece, confirming Blizzard's opinion that PvP achievements should be on display. The spaulders have the following stats (number in parentheses are the improvements over its Season 3 equivalent):
430 Armor (+30)
+34 Strength (+4)
+34 Agility (+4)
+47 Stamina (+4)
+20 Intellect (+4)
+21 Critical Strike (+4)
+21 Resilience (+0)

Socket Bonus: +3 Resilience Rating
Classes: Druid
WoW Insider says: Brutal Gladiator Shoulders are peacock gear. Considering that most players who will obtain these items will be Restoration Druids who have Arena points to spare, it's not even worth considering.
Guardian's Dragonhide Belt
Because it is a visual match for the Brutal Gladiator's Sanctuary, and because it comes with no personal ratings requirement, the belt is most likely to be the most widely distributed Season 4 gear. It is purchasable with Honor points, so even players who do not participate in Arena PvP can obtain it. The belt has the following stats (number in parentheses are the improvements over its Season 3 equivalent):
322 Armor (+22)
+34 Strength (+4)
+33 Agility (+3)
+46 Stamina (+4)
+24 Intellect (+4)
+25 Critical Strike (+4)
+26 Resilience (+0)
Classes: Rogue, Druid
WoW Insider says: With the low Honor cost and no personal ratings restriction, this belt should be among the most widespread Feral gear come Season 4. It's a no-brainer purchase once you have the Honor for it.


Guardian's Dragonhide Bracers
The only other Guardian piece with a socket is the amulet, which doesn't have a personal rating requirement. Coupled with the fact that bracers are visually insignificant, being hidden under gloves or robes, most players feel that there's little urgency to get them. A 1575 personal ratings requirement also requires decent performance in Arenas. The bracers have the following stats (number in parentheses are the improvements over its Season 3 equivalent):
253 (+17)
+25 Stength (+3)
+25 Agility (+3)
+33 Stamina (+4)
+24 Critical Strike (+3)
+18 Resilience (+0)

Socket Bonus: +2 Resilience Rating
Classes: Rogue, Druid
WoW Insider says: The best bracers most Druids will get outside of Sunwell Plateau, it is also an excellent choice for Rogues. The higher armor, resilience, and crit coupled with a Red Socket make up for losses in attack power, agility, and stamina. Probably the best Guardian bracers available due to the versatility.


Guardian's Dragonhide Boots

The most visually important match of all Guardian items -- although it won't be seen on Tauren feet, the boots are a big jump from a 1575 personal ratings requirement and is as demanding to get as the head piece at 1700 personal ratings. It is also as expensive to purchase as the belt, which has no ratings requirement. The slippers have the following stats (number in parentheses are the improvements over its Season 3 equivalent):
385 Armor (+28)
+34 Strength (+4)
+33 Agility (+4)
+46 Stamina (+4)
+24 Intellect (+4)
+25 Critical Strike (+4)
+26 Resilience (+0)
Classes: Rogue, Druid
WoW Insider says: Although 1700 is the highest personal ratings requirement outside of the weapons and shoulders, these boots are also good for tanking, making its usefulness extend outside of Arenas. Definitely a good purchase if you can manage the ratings.
