Sunday Morning Funnies: Testing

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

What's on the list this week? A birth, a pretty powerful telescope, some unusual daycare inmates, some very creative roleplay, a zealous quest giver and ... well, you'll just have to read for yourselves.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Rock!

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

Daily Quests finally updated! Thanks for pointing it out in the comments, all. It's Almost Like Waiting for a Comic. I love it.

Last week's comments section also leads me to believe that SMF is best read either once caffeinated or while becoming caffeinated. You've been warned.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Zippity zap

Happy August 1st! What, no gallery, you say? Sorry to disappoint you guys - you're going to have to wait one more week. But if I do say so myself, it just keeps getting better; it will be worth the wait. In the meantime, why not read through this week's list of comics?

All the World's a Stage: We don't need no narration

All the World's a Stage, and all the orcs and humans merely players. They have their stories and their characters; and one player in his time plays many roles.

Throughout my career as a roleplaying columnist on WoW.com, I've been talking about roleplaying as a way to tell stories, but last week a comment by Zombie, as well as those made by a few others on the same topic, caused me to think about roleplay stories in a new way. Perhaps what we roleplayers do isn't actually storytelling so much as it is character development through interesting and somewhat disjointed anecdotes.

There's really no beginning, middle, or end to a roleplayed character in WoW. Instead, what you get is a mishmash of events and experiences, which you may then string together into a story in your mind if you like. But even if you don't, you can see that most of us don't really expect for a narrative to develop from a clear beginning, through various plot developments, and finally lead into an exciting climax. There is something else roleplayers want to get out of their experience, even if many of us have trouble articulating exactly what it is.

Sunday Morning Funnies: 98% agree

Another Sunday arrives, and now it is almost June! This means less than a month until servers flood with children, Barrens chat takes on new life, and we're all being asked for "golds" and dungeon runs. Savor the next couple of weeks.

Blizzard legal censures Shakes and Fidget

First the legal crackdown on fan-made iPhone apps, and now this: German-based webcomic Shakes and Fidget, a longtime sight in our Sunday Morning Funnies column, has apparently been smacked with a cease-and-desist by Blizzard. Our German isn't that great (and we've reached out to the comic's creators for further comment), but a translation of this forum page tells us that Activision-Blizzard's legal department suggested to them that there was enough similarity between the official game and the unofficial comic to cause a problem, and while they believe that they're covered under parody laws, they decided to take the "offending" comics offline anyway, and are apparently currently working on editing them so that they can be put back up without any issues.

Obviously, since the comics are offline, we have no idea what material Blizzard objected to -- you could argue that depictions of certain gear created by Blizzard artists in the game or specific names are under trademark and thus could be protected under copyright law. But even then, Shakes and Fidget is one of many, many fan-made webcomics to obviously depict World of Warcraft and Blizzard-designed items specific to the game, and we haven't yet heard of any other webcomics that have been approached in this way.

Still, as they might say in Germany, wir riechen eine ratte. Without knowing the exact nature of the comics that Blizzard had an issue with, this seems like a complete overreach on their part, especially considering that it's some of their biggest fans who are making these comics, and that many artists have portrayed many videogames in webcomics without anyone confusing the issue of whether they were official or not. We'll keep an eye out for more information (and we've also contacted Blizzard for comment) -- if you know of any other webcomics or fan artists who've been approached by Blizzard in this way, definitely let us know.

Thanks, Henry!

Sunday Morning Funnies: A murder of crows and a crew of dwarfs

Cru the DwarfHappy Mother's Day to all you WoW Moms, and for all you kids who might have forgotten, you'd better go say it now while you've just been reminded. Come back though, because I have a nice list of comics waiting, as well as a (mostly) friendly gnome controversy.

Sunday Morning Funnies: They did it with a shirt

This week's set of comics is actually quite topical, from a recent scandal, to world news to proper feline nutrition. There also aren't as many Noblegarden-themed comics as I expected.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Look at all the femurs

www.awkwardzombie.comThis week, we have a couple of comics that haven't updated because the authors are otherwise occupied. Namely, these are The Adventures of Disgraph T Dwarf and World of Warcraft, eh?. Enjoy your hiatus, Cadychan, and good luck with your story D (I can call you that, y'see, we're tight or something. Plus, you won't know if I'm really calling you Dan, Disgraph, or "Dwarf", which is slightly better than "You" but not quite as polite as "You there!", and I do like to antagonize Dwarves!).
  1. Awkward Zombie: Horse Remorse. I love the comment underneath!
  2. Cru the Dwarf is back up and running!
  3. Experience Points: Vincent gets a Mammoth, and reminisces about the old days.
  4. Check out the latest from Flintlocke vs. the Horde.
  5. GU Comics: A Touch Obvious. I highly recommend reading the story underneath it (as I always do, really).
  6. Check out the latest from LFG. My only complaint is the absence of the bunny. Usually he can be seen idling in the background, at least!
  7. Manic Graffiti: My Money's on an EU Guild.
  8. Massive Pwnage: Level Requirements.
  9. NoObz: Overcheatage. I think everyone knows how this feels.
  10. NPC: Diversion Tactics. My cats do something like this too, although I think they might just be gunning for my chair.
  11. Teh Gladiators: The Man's a Manimal.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Innovative posterior

I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend! I have a nice list to help you kick-start your day. Unfortunately, it seems that Cru the Dwarf will not be updating this week, due to technical difficulties. The featured photo is not of his computer, but it seems he will need a new one before the comic can resume. In the meantime, you can donate, or express your overwhelming sorrow!
  1. Dark Legacy Comics: Common Descent.
  2. Experience Points: Murlocs vs. Fries.
  3. Extra Life: It's all made of ones and zeros.
  4. Flintlocke vs the Horde: War Party part 2.
  5. Shakes and Fidget: Practice Makes Perfect.
  6. Check out the latest from LFG.
  7. Wolfslatoxx from NoObz. I love that little robotic dude.
  8. NPC: Purple Death Puddles.
  9. Teh Gladiators: Double Trouble.
  10. The Adventures of Disgraph T. Dwarf: Standing Out.
  11. World of Warcraft, eh? It's like, totally In the Nick of Time.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Panda Attack!

NoObz is still on holiday, but Ding! has been updated. In other news, Disgraph has a new new site, because the new one liked to take a lot of naps. While everyone loves naps, they are not for websites. I have to say, I am loving the new design, although the text is a bit more difficult to read.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Failed analogies

Can you believe it's almost April? I'm afraid of the impending warm weather.

This week, we have two absentee comic authors, not counting those that do not update regularly. Fortunately, both left us filler content, so it's almost as if we're not missing anything. We also have a new, one-time comic this week.
  1. Awkward Zombie: Bully Mammoth.
  2. Check out the latest from Cru the Dwarf. I like this one, or "heart" it as it were.
  3. Dark Legacy Comics points to Death Knights as our latest common enemy, but did anyone pause for the butterfly?
  4. Blizzard has a fifth game in development, you know. Experience Points.
  5. Flintlocke vs. the Horde shows that while Trolls might be questionably gruesome, they're also pretty forgiving.
  6. Giant Sewer Rat. GU Comics.
  7. Check out the latest from LFG. Man, I love that bunny.
  8. New Venture, from Monkey Punchers.
  9. NoObz filler.
  10. NPC: Toxic Guilt.
  11. Teh Gladiators: All he wanted was to play.
  12. More filler! Due to the flu, Disgraph is filler this week. I wouldn't recommend reading it though if you're eating or have sympathetic reflexes.
  13. World of Warcraft, eh?: The Horse Men Cometh.
  14. SMBC has posted a WoW-relevant comic. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Sunday Morning Funnies: Stop your orating

Howdy folks! I'm pleased to announce that not only do I have another list of newly updated comics for your enjoyment, I also have news, and not the sad "Fargo is leaving" or "Ding! did it again" news.

The Adventures of Disgraph T. Dwarf has moved to a fancy new location! It is sleek, and less orange, which is what I was going to say before I checked the old site and realized that it isn't orange at all. Was it ever orange, or did Blogspot's icon somehow imprint this into my brain?

Sunday Morning Funnies: Jammy Jam

Kissybear is back! The amazing Ding! will return and we will no longer have to cringe on Sunday mornings. Who's excited?

We also have some great comics today, including a newbie to the list that was tipped in last week's comments:
