Spiritual Guidance: Spring cleaning your talent tree

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life. Electric word, life. It means forever and that's a mighty long time. But I'm here to tell you -- there's something else. The World of Warcraft. A world of never-ending gnome corpses. You can always see the shadows, day or night. So when you call up that Spiritual Guidance columnist in Beverly Hills -- you know the one, Dr. Fox Van Allen -- instead of asking him how much of your time is left, ask him how much of your mind, baby. Cause he's going to flay it into effing oblivion every Wednesday.

Ladies and gentlemen, my first car ever was my grandmother's old 1986 Ford Taurus. It had a digital speedometer and a pretty kicking tape deck. I even got the sample cassette tape that came with the car. I spent some of the best years of my life cruising the Garden State while listening to Neil Diamond's Heartlight and the theme to Cats. (Before you judge, most of you were listening to Sugar Ray and the theme to Friends instead at the time.)

What in the hell does that have to deal with shadow priesting? The car was the right fit for me a decade ago, but it's just not right for me anymore. In Warcraft, just as in life, the right choices change over time. I mean, what the hell am I going to do without an iPod connection in my car? And Ford Tauruses -- do they still even make those?

When I applied for a new raid team a few months ago, I went to my class trainer and put together a pretty good build for my shadow priest. It worked great then for the content I was working on. After re-examining my build, I realize that times have changed, and so should my talent tree.

Psychic Horror was a great ability during Trial of the Grand Crusader progression. It's useless in Icecrown. And it's not the only talent that has outlived its usefulness. Shifting around a few points can have a very noticeable effect on your DPS, mana regen, and survivability.

The price to respec varies -- it could cost you as much as 50 gold depending on how many times you've done it recently. Still, when you compare that to the amount you spend twice that on a single epic gem and even more on high-end enchants, respecing gives you one of the best returns on investment in the game.

Lichborne: PvP pointers for Death Knights

Welcome to Lichborne, Your weekly peek into the world of the Death Knight.

Death Knights have it pretty good in PvP. Thanks to big whomping two-handers and magic damage strikes and spells, we can do massive burst damage and tear through armor defenses pretty easily. On the control front, we have Strangulate, Mind Freeze, Chains of Ice, and, depending on spec, maybe even a few other ways to silence, slow, or shut down an enemy player. Finally, our plate armor and defense cooldowns assure that should we the unlucky target of the burst train, we can hold out a lot longer than many.

Still, it's not just being a Death Knight alone that gets you PvP fame and godhood. It does help to have the right talents, gear, and strategy. So we're going to talk about that a bit, focusing mostly on the talents. Here's two popular PvP Talent builds.

Lichborne: Talents for catching up

Welcome to Lichborne, where Daniel Whitcomb is doing some last minute agonizing over what face to give his Death Knight on Thursday.

So there are quite a few of us, I imagine, who are still on track to switch to a Death Knight, or at least play one quite extensively, immediately when Wrath of the Lich King hits the live servers. But the fact remains that you'll be 15 levels behind everyone to start, and if you have friends to catch up to, you're going to want to get up there pretty quickly, most likely. Even if you plan to take it slow, you'll still want a good effective leveling build, most likely. So today, we'll look at three solid solo DPS builds from each tree, and discuss how to use them most effectively for grinding and leveling.

Inspect changes in 2.3

A few players have noticed a really interesting change hidden way down in the patch 2.3 notes. Inspect has been updated-- the range on it has now been increased to 30 yards, which is fine, and when you inspect a player, you can now see their talent choices. Which is... whoa. So much for privacy-- now you don't even need to alt-tab out to check the Armory to see every talent choice every player has made.

I'm not exactly part of the tinfoil hat crowd-- I've already posted my spec here on the site for everyone to see anyway. But it does seem a little strange to allow every other player to see every talent choice in the realms. Whatever happened to the super special seekrit talent build, that perfect setup that only you have that gives you an advantage on the battlegrounds? The reason for having talents in the first place is to customize your character according to how you want to play it, and if everyone else automatically has access to your talents at just a glance, just how custom are you, really? If the "Inspect" function only showed your spec and numbers (not individual talents), that's a little better-- how's it working out there, PTR people?

Of course, the fact is that this will make everyone better, eventually-- everyone will have more access to the best talent builds, and they'll just have to take notes and respec as necessary. It also will mean an end, once and for all, to lying about specs (no more fibbing that I'm a DPS Shaman when I have my DPS gear on). Better take this time before 2.3 to make sure your specs are all lined up, because after 2.3, they'll be opened up for all the world to see.

Thanks, Prosper on Frostmourne!
