WRUP: When did it become November?

WRUP When did it become November
It's November. When did that happen? Yes, at the end of October, thank you so much. But seriously, it seems like this year just flew by. Already, stores are busily stocking the shelves with winter holiday decorations, ignoring the upcoming Thanksgiving in a mad dash to get the biggest sales out. And while that's obnoxious, I can't blame them because time is just whizzing right on by.

So, when we rounded up the hottest news in "what are you playing" this week, I asked your intrepid staff of WoW Insider do-gooders what they're doing to prep for the holiday season.

And yes. I'm totally ignoring the election. That wasn't an accident.

Arcane Brilliance: Things I'm thankful for

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Arcane Brilliance for arcane, fire and frost mages. This week, Arcane Brilliance is feeling especially festive. Pyroblasting a turkey will do that.

So apparently it's the holiday season. I'm still burping up cranberries and stuffing, my wife has started forcing Christmas music upon me (and frankly, if it's not Mannheim Steamroller, I don't want to hear it), and I've reached the point in the year when -- for my own mental well-being -- I refuse to look at a bank statement until February. To those of you who survived yesterday's annual gladiatorial bloodletting and emerged victorious from the front doors of Walmart or Old Navy, hoisting your hard-won set of hand towels above your head like a trophy: I salute you. To those of you who, like me, stayed home and bought stuff on Steam and Xbox Live: I also salute you, only I do so from my chair, by typing in an emote. Because, really, we're all pretty lazy. But damned if I don't feel well rested.

In deference to the spirit of the season, we here at Arcane Brilliance thought it might be nice to spend a column thinking about the things we're grateful right now. You'll find the mage-related stuff behind the jump, but here's my non-mage-related short list of awesome things:
  1. flatbread chicken sandwiches
  2. getting randomly tagged on Dragon Quest IX while walking through the airport Tuesday night
  3. troll druid cat form
  4. The Walking Dead
  5. Mumford and Sons
  6. discovering the brilliance of Arrested Development and Friday Night Lights on Netflix
Taco Bell, Netflix, Square Enix, etc. ... feel free to make any and all endorsement checks out to Christian Belt, care of WoW Insider. Also, screw you, AMC, for canceling Rubicon. I was just starting to enjoy that one. And screw you double, FOX, for putting Fringe on Fridays, where all good FOX shows go to die.

Breakfast Topic: Thankful

About this time every year, we Americans go into food coma lockdown mode, hop on board planes, trains and automobiles and head to family and friend gatherings. Thanksgiving is happening in the United States, and much food will be eaten, relatives will be awkward and some delicious pie will be baked. We also usually spill our guts about what we are thankful for.

On the nerdy side of things, we lost a lot in World of Warcraft in the past few days. The Shattering took a lot of our old-world nostalgia and focus and replaced it with the beginnings of Cataclysm and a whole new experience. I'm pretty damn thankful to Blizzard for creating essentially World of Warcraft 2 without making us all switch over to some new world and splitting the playerbase.

On the less nerdy side of things, here in the real world, I'm very thankful for the very fact that I get to type these words into this text editor and hit "post." I'm incredibly thankful that I have the opportunity to work with WoW Insider and talk to so many fans and WoW enthusiasts. Above all, I'm thankful for your comments and discussions and how incredibly wonderful you all make me feel with supportive emails and feedback. I'm thankful that you enjoy my writing and my ramblings on the WoW Insider Show. So thank you all.

What are you guys thankful for this year? You don't have to be from the United States to get in on this sap train.

It came from the Blog: We partied like pilgrims

Last Wednesday night, It came from the Blog got together to Party like Pilgrims. We got some Pilgrim's Bounty achievements and won some loot. Unfortunately, the Guild Roster gets buggy when there are more than 500 members. So I don't know exactly how many showed up, but I estimate it at around 240 over the course of the event.

Blog Overlords Adam Holisky, Michael Gray, Matt Low and Kelly Aarons were there. Adam held a trivia quiz and gave out some loot codes to speedy contestants. And, of course, I was there, but I am the brood Blog Mother. We had a great time and really enjoyed running around with everyone. And of course, we took pictures.

We have more events planned soon. Expect a Battleground Bonanza, a Hogger/Faire excursion and some Feast of Winter Veil fun all in December. We hope you'll join us!

Speculating at the patch 3.3 release date

All right. Nethaera says that Blizzard can't actually tell us the patch release date before it's out, because they don't want to be wrong. Fortunately, sites like ours don't have any such compunctions, so we're free to speculate on when we might finally see this patch on the live realms. Note that I said speculate -- this is not a guarantee, and we have no secret knowledge save lots and lots of experience at watching Blizzard create, test and release content. Don't use any dates we mention here to plan any vacations from work or family events -- as anyone who's ever tried to log in and do anything significant on patch day will tell you, you're going to be disappointed. And we don't want the patch to come early anyway, so Blizzard can delay as much as they want to. Anyone who complains otherwise has to go into the Octagon with Rossi.

That said, testing is moving relatively smoothly on the PTRs, and lots of the content seems like it's pretty well put together. We aren't nearly done with testing yet, though -- we haven't seen most of the Icecrown raid, and we're still waiting on Halls of Reflection, the 5-man where we'll face Arthas. Gear still needs to go into the game and be tuned. There are around 15 different bosses and encounters in Icecrown (that we know of), and if Blizzard continues on the schedule of testing one or two per week, we're looking at six to eight more weeks of testing for just that content. The PTR itself went up just under a month ago, and it seems that we've got at least a month or, likely, more of testing and updating to be done.

The Queue: Wherein Alex renames himself Nostradamus

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.

After a year of writing this thing, I've run out of quirky ways to introduce this thing that don't reek of veiled desperation. So screw the veil. Along with your question in today's edition of The Queue, I want you to write an introduction for the next edition of this column that I write, which will be the day after tomorrow. I will pick the best of the bunch to use. Keep it clean!

crusherkid asked...

"I've read reports that because of the servers going down in China that World of Warcraft has dropped down to only 5 million subscribers. Is that correct?"

Free character migration for EU realms

We're just now coming out of our Thanksgiving turkey-induced haze here at WoW Insider, so if you've seen this already, forgive us, but Blizzard announced late last week that there's relief on the way for EU characters tied up by queues -- they've got a whole mess of free migrations in the mix. We've got the whole list of transfers after the break as well.

Argent Dawn appears to be in the worst shape, as Blizzard is sending players from that realm onto three different realms. Magtheridon seems to be the least busy -- all they're transferring off there is the Horde-side players. They're also transferring players off of a few different realms to the newly-created one, Chamber of Aspects, so if you're looking for a new start, there you go.

These migrations are going until December 2nd, so now's your chance, EU players, if you're on the selected realms and have been waiting to jump ship.

Happy Thanksgiving from WoW Insider

America today is celebrating Thanksgiving Day, a holiday where we all sit down with friends and family, eat loads of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberries, and all the other good stuff, and give thanks for all the blessings we've received throughout the year. WoW Insider would like to wish you, our readers, a happy Thanksgiving and a great and safe holiday season. We are thankful for many things, but mostly for you: it's because you come and read and visit the site that we get to keep it going every day of every week the rest of the year. Much appreciated -- thank you.

Many of our bloggers are also with their families and attending their own celebrations this weekend, so posting may be slow around here today and tomorrow. Odds are that you haven't reached 80 yet, and even if you have, odds are even better that you haven't grinded all the reputations you want, so just head on into the game and work on that for a bit, and we'll be back after this weekend with our usual news, views, and insight into this game and its players.

Breakfast Topic: Holiday playtime

For a number of our readers and writers, today is a holiday. But the World of Warcraft doesn't stop for real world holidays (especially considering that the game's low-key Harvest Festival ended weeks ago)! Life in Azeroth (and Outland) continues as normal -- but on this, and other holidays, will you be taking part? Is Azeroth off-limits during holiday family time, is it a place to escape the holiday stress, is it a place to get together with far-away family or friends? Tell us how you're planning on spending this holiday (if it's a holiday where you are) or future holidays (if it's not!) in Azeroth.

Thanksgiving is upon us

We at WoW Insider wish a Happy Thanksgiving to our American readers.

Many of our writers will be unplugged for the holiday, spending it with family and friends. So forgive us in advance for a light posting day. After the festivities have ended and we've slept off the turkey-induced coma, we will resume our relentless search for breaking news and the community reaction to the 2.3.2 patch.

In the meantime, know that out of the many things we are thankful in our lives (including class buffs in sneaky patches) we are very thankful for your continued readership, comments, and tips. Oh yes, we love the tips.
