WoW Moviewatch: Beyond Godlike Trailer

Guild promos can be tricky things. They serve a few different purposes. Some, like yesterday's Das Strafgericht, celebrate things that a guild has already done together. Others, however, like today's Beyond Godlike, is a teaser for the future. It's meant to inspire the guild, and help prepare them for what they will be doing together.

The author, Draix, dropped me a note about the Beyond Godlike trailer, asking if I had some tips. That's a little tough, because a good movie review has to be focused on the purpose of the movie. If the purpose of this piece was to be a music video, I'd be forced to say it fails. But, if I guess correctly that the trailer is meant to rile up his Guild for what's coming when 3.1 drops, I'd say the video is outstanding already.

I love the character tableaus. While they're not riddled with character depth, they clearly indicate a sense of purpose and action. The way Draix frames each model sets up a sense of purpose and action. The sweeping score he chose builds a sense of excitement. The hints of Ulduar shown in the architecture he displays warms us to the subject. He's done a good job building a feeling of adventure.

If there were an area I'd like to see Draix develop, I guess it would have to be in providing his trailer a narrative focus. His character shots, like I said, definitely hint at purpose and action, but I'd like to see some context. Is the paladin fighting undead for personal reasons (angst? tragedy?), or is he just knocking out a daily? A little more information about what's going on would be nice, but I still like the feeling that this is a "gathering of heroes."

Blizzard releases Wrath Gate trailer in HD

With the release of Wrath of the Lich King and its inclusion of world-changing phased events, Blizzard's stated goal of ramping up their dynamic storytelling seems more and more like a success, but it doesn't stop with quests alone. The in-game cinematic for the final legs of the epic Wrath Gate quest line really shows what Blizzard is capable of outside of CGI with the in-game engine and a bit of creative tinkering. Not to mention it's a huge lore explosion that fuels the story for the rest of the expansion!

Yes, yes, old news for some. For those of you among us who haven't yet experienced this particular quest line, of course, it's not to be missed. For those who've seen it in-game already or who just can't contain themselves, though, you can stream the incredibly spoiler-heavy cinematic in full HD on Blizzard's site now or download it directly from BigDownload. If you're into it, there's also a nice short story/summary of the momentous events directly under it.

We can hope for two things--that Blizzard continues to put these kinds of awesome scenes in the game, and that when they do, they give those of us with nice monitors/TVs the ability to watch them all pretty-like.

WoW Moviewatch: The Night Watchmen Trailer

When we sought constructive feedback for WoWBeef, Episode 1, for Mindblade Studios, we weren't sure what reaction to expect. The machinima missed the mark in most ways. However, it looks like he took the criticism and worked on what was lacking.

His latest trailer, for his upcoming series, The Night Watchmen, seems to advertise the movie without giving everything away. While it does follow the typical storyline of spousal murder and revenge, we're hoping that he attempts to keep things interesting within the format. Given that this is an episodic adventure, they're constantly on the lookout for voice actors. If you would like to participate, send an email to jljeremiah AT gmail DOT com!

Fury of the Sunwell trailer Lore analysis

So you've had time to traipse around Sunwell Isle, you've read the new lore (both the official stuff and Alex's Know Your Lore: The Sunwell), watched the trailer, and all that good stuff, but you're still a bit confused. What does it all mean?

Let the lore geeks at WoW Insider help you out a bit. We've put together a scene by scene analysis of the lore behind the Fury of the Sunwell trailer, and we're presenting it to you here. Hopefully, it sheds some more light on this whole "Did Kael'thas go crazy or didn't he, and what is up with Kil'jaedan anyway?" thing.

WoW Moviewatch: The Last Hunt trailer

If PETA were in WoW, they wouldn't be pleased with Nav. He just finished his first ever machinima, a teaser for his upcoming series, The Last Hunt. The video follows a boy who aspires to become a hunter and be one with nature.

The reception on Warcraftmovies was fairly good, but I'd have to agree with the commenters about the voice acting. Not only did the dialogue feel forced, but some sentences actually made no sense! However, we have to give Nav major kudos for putting himself out there. This blogger can't wait to see the series!

WoW Moviewatch: Rock 'n' Troll trailer

There are few trailers that leave me anxious to see the final result. However, Kilh is a genius. From the beginning to the end, this trailer is just full of brilliance. If you can believe it, this was his first work using Adobe After Effects! You can read about his movie progress on his blog.

I asked Kilh what the machinima would be about, and his description left me scratching my head. Apparently the Rock 'n' Troll plot involves a banker that dreams of being a rockstar whose raptor is stolen by evil murlocs that plan to brainwash the world. Did I mention the superevil mini-zombie-tauren minions? He's going for the cheesy 80s B-movie look and feel. I can't wait!

Sunwell Plateau trailer

The Sunwell Plateau trailer, released by Blizzard, has to be on the coolest trailers I've seen from them recently. If you have a second, turn the sound up a bit and have a look. You can watch the trailer right above via a YouTube hosted copy of the video, or head on over to the Blizzard page about Patch 2.4 and watch it there.

I give the people who made this an A+ for the day.

Of course, this will all be made even better when patch 2.4 actually does drop, and we're hopeful that it'll come next week. Today wasn't the day for it, unfortunately, despite some teasing remarks made by blue posters yesterday.

What do you think of the video? Pretty neat, eh?

WoW Moviewatch: Tales of the Past III Cinematic Trailer

(Warning: If you haven't seen Tales of the Past III, this video could be considered a spoiler. Approach with caution.)

They say that imitation is the best form of flattery. I hope Martin Falch takes that to heart when he sees this nearly three minute cinematic cut of his movie. DragonstarDT took all of the exciting bits about TotP3 and put them to music, creating a short video that gives you a vague idea of what the movie is about. With over 750,000 downloads of the actual machinima, it certainly needs no trailer boost. However, if you haven't seen it yet, this trailer might entice you to give it a watch!

WoW Moviewatch: Gort'agash trailer

Shagatrog has put together a short trailer of an upcoming WoW based movie he is making. For his very first try at editing I was impressed with his story telling, music selection and use of the Model Viewer. He needs voice actors for his production so take a look at the trailer and if you're interested in helping him out, check out a forum thread he started about his movie.

WoW Moviewatch: Unofficial Patch Trailer

We recently showcased Surgee's cool and funny (and somewhat disturbing) music video "World of Warcraft: Evolution." Now he's brought to us his vision of a future WoW patch, in which some new features are added to the game to make it more playable and interesting. He gives concrete examples of how these new features will play out, which is something Blizzard should really take a look at. The lore-based trailers they do are wonderful of course, but something like this focused on serious gameplay would be really neat too.

WoW Moviewatch: Unlimted Escapism vol 0 Trailer 2

After the success of Unlimited Escapism 1, 2 & 3 as well as I'm So Sick how does master Machinimist Baron Soosdon top himself? With Unlimited Escapism Vol 0 of course. His latest Machinima piece is almost done, but he didn't want to leave his loyal viewers waiting so he cranked out a new Trailer for it.

DO NOT click the You Tube embedded link above. It doesn't do justice to the surreal beauty of the mind-bending visuals. Instead, go to the Warcraft Movies page for the trailer and click on the Stage6 stream. It's like having widescreen HD on your monitor. The YouTube link is like watching a VHS copied one too many times.

The final movie is due sometime next week.

WoW Insider's Lament of the Highborne video analysis

Last week, Blizzard released a new machinima movie called Lament of the Highbourne, featuring Sylvana's performance of the old Quel'dorei song and a retelling of what went down between her and Arthas Menethil, now known as the Lich King. WoW Insider, being the extreme lore geeks that we are, has put together a video analysis of the movie that Blizzard released, featuring an almost frame-by-frame commentary about Sylvanas' story. You can see the finished product above-- prepare to be lore-geeked out.

Two things that didn't make it into the commentary above in time: reader Lift sent us a bit of insight about Arthas riding an Undead mount-- does that mean, he asks, that Death Knights will get their own Warlock/Paladin-esque mount? And one more thing we noticed-- the spectre behind Arthas as he resurrects Sylvanas may well be the Lich King himself. By all means: discuss.

New movies to download from WorldofWarcraft.com

Blizzard has two new movies to download from their movie page on worldofwarcraft.com. One is a highlight video from BlizzCon 2007 which includes clips from the costume and dance competitions.

The other is a gameplay trailer of Lament of the Highborne. For those of you not familiar with the quest, you find a necklace when questing in Ghostlands and are told to turn it in to Lady Sylvanas in the Undercity. When you do, after angrily sending you on your way, she sings the Lament of the Highborne, accompanied by some Highborne ghosts. This is one of my favorite quests in WoW and the song is hauntingly beautiful.

The video does more than just show the gameplay footage of Lady Sylvanas singing her lament. It shows the actual story and loss of the necklace while the song is sung. It does not explain why Sylvanas is displayed as an undead Night Elf normally but is a Blood Elf in the video, but I can get over that. Maybe Blood Elf Banshees look like Night Elves for some reason.

The BlizzCon video is good if you want to see the fun of the event, but for me the real treat is the Lament of the Highborne video.

WoW Moviewatch: MMOvie

Originally, I thought this trailer was just a joke, but no-- it's real. Someone out there (from a site named Voig.com, apparently) is actually going to put together a feature length film featuring scenes from famous films redone in the World of Warcraft. Crazy.

That link above goes to an interview with the directors, where they talk about filming on a PvP server (why would you do that?), getting the costumes to match up just right, and the fact that it took 100 hours of capture, and "weeks and weeks" for their editor to get the whole thing done. Other than the interview, there's surprisingly little news going around about the movie-- no release date yet, and to be honest, I'm still not completely sure there is a full length movie, as the only note about that is in the small excerpt on the front page. At any rate, the trailer looks pretty sweet-- maybe we'll get to see more eventually.

WoW Moviewatch: Wrath of the Lich King

Fresh from Blizzard today, here's the trailer for Wrath of the Lich King. My first impressions? It looks surprisingly similar to old-world Azeroth -- which shouldn't be surprising, I guess, because it is in the same world, after all. "So come then, you heroes" is the new "You are not prepared." I can't wait to make a Death Knight.
