Recently, Blizzard took down all of the realms on a Friday for urgent maintenance. This prompted many readers to fantasize about what the downtime was all about.

It's the hamsters. Server maintenance is always a problem with the hamsters.

My imagination took me elsewhere ...

All realms are scheduled to be down for maintenance from 1 p.m. EDT (10 a.m. PDT) to 3 p.m. EDT (Noon PDT).

We will be performing urgent maintenance on all realms to resolve a technical issue Friday, September 28th. Maintenance will begin at 10:00 AM and conclude at approximately 12:00 PM PDT.

We don't know what the technical issue is, but we'll keep this post updated with any new information.

Update: All realms are back online.

Today (well, today if you're reading this on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, which you probably are), there will be some surprise downtime in order to correct a technical issue. There's no indication of a client patch or anything like that, just some good ol' standard downtime from 8 a.m. EST / 5 a.m. PST until 2 p.m. EST / 11 a.m. PST.

If things get extended, we'll let you know about it.

Blizzard has announced that they are conducting urgent maintenance on several realms. Though the official Warcraft twitter account announced it would only go on until noon PST (the tweet was about account maintenance), the in-game and forum messages state that they do not know how long the maintenance will take. They expect to have more information by 12:30 p.m. PST / 3:30 p.m. EST.

We will keep you informed as the status changes.
