Ask WoW Insider: Do you optimize your rep grinds?

It's the end of another week, and you know what that means -- it's time for another edition of Ask WoW Insider, where we post your questions for our readers to answer. This week we have a question from Rylia, who is curious about how many people actually mesh their playstyle around World of Warcraft's reputation system:

WoW is my first MMORPG, and really the first computer game I've played for a decade or more -- I used to play things like King's Quest and Hero's Quest and Police Quest. So for me, the natural way to start when I get to a new zone is to fill up on all the quests, and march off to tick them off. Only later do I start thinking about getting my faction reps up. However, basically every guide to faction rep, for every faction, says that to make the most of your efforts, you need to wait to do your quests until you've ground up to honored with instances or turn-in quests.

Interesting! Of course we all know the best way to gain reputation with most factions (Outland factions in particular, because each of those has an associated dungeon) is to run through the instances first, because instances will stop providing reputation gain at some point, while quests will give reputation no matter what your current reputation is. But do you really play the best way, or do you look head straight for those exclamation points, like Rylia does?

Ask WoW Insider couldn't keep posting without a delicious diet of your questions -- so send 'em in to ask AT wowinsider DOT com! Thanks for reading, and we'll be back next week with another of your questions!

A new week is upon us -- and that means it's time for a new caption contest! All we're asking you to do is submit a great caption for the above screenshot (click for a higher-resolution version) in our comments, and in return you get a chance to win a 60-day gamecard (first place) or an AFK hat from J!NX (second place). You've got until Wednesday at 11:59 PM EST to come up with your caption, and on Friday, we'll be asking you to vote on your favorites to help us decide on a winner!

And with the option of doing contests for some of our readers or doing contests for none of our readers, I pick the former. For full details, please check out the official rules.

Update
: I'm afraid our entry period has come and gone -- but we'll be voting for winners on Friday, so check back to let us know who your favorite was!

Breakfast Topic: Finding bloggers at BlizzCon [Updated]

Yessir, we've been quite difficult to find as we wander the floor at BlizzCon, but one lucky reader was able to manage it. Heather Nielsen caught Elizabeth Harper Friday as she stood in the lobby of the convention center. Heather, who plays Ricol the pally on the Cenarius realm, received a copy of the Warcraft Archive for her leet hunting skills. For the rest of you intrepid readers, take heart. Mike Schramm and I are still out there toting our phat lootz for those that are clever enough to track us down. Find the bloggers and receive some very cool prizes!

Update: Both Mike Schramm and I were able to give out our prizes during the Saturday session of BlizzCon. Thanks to all you intrepid readers who came to hang out with us. We saw your smiling faces all over the con, and it made our time there even more enjoyable. On to next year!

Update 2: In the photo is the Find a Blogger winner #2, Erin Martell who plays Trystania the gnome mage (yay mages!) on Eitrigg. She's been reading WoW Insider for nigh-on forever (read 2005) and I was so excited to get to meet her in person. Erin got a copy of "Hacking World of Warcraft, and I am honestly jealous of her because I wish I could have kept the book for myself."

Let's play find the blogger!

You probably realize that WoW Insider is going to be out on the BlizzCon convention floor in force today. But what you don't know is that some of us are carrying phat loot around with us. We've got prizes to give away and the first one to find us out on the convention floor is gonna get 'em! So while you're out exploring BlizzCon, keep your eyes open for Elizabeth Harper, Mike Schramm (he's the one with the devious look), and Amanda Rivera (her eyes aren't really that red, but her hair is). Between the three of them, they've got a copy of Hacking World of Warcraft (an excellent mod and macro book which, I assure you, involves no actual exploitive behavior!), a copy of The Warcraft Archive, and a 60-day World of Warcraft gamecard. So come on and find us in the crowds today at BlizzCon -- the first person to find each of us will walk away with a prize!

WoW Insider's BlizzCon meetup

Did you miss the first WoW Insider meetup? Well, I suppose we'll have to forgive you -- obviously, not everyone could make the time to come down to BlizzCon this year. But you missed out on a heck of a time. WoW Insider showed up at 7 o'clock (we were early, but after a long wait in line for our tickets, we were focused on finding someplace to sit down and have some cool drinks) and most of crowd dispersed by around 11. And in the meantime? We talked about our favorite game, World of Warcraft; the classes we played and the servers we played on; our favorite WoW Insider pieces; those strange people who send us tips on things we've already written; and, of course, our predictions for what would be announced at BlizzCon. Throughout all of that conversation, we even managed to hold a trivia contest and give out some cool prizes.

So what are you waiting for? Browse through our gallery to see what it was like to be there yourself!

WoW Moviewatch: Time Gnomes II

You've seen Jimmy: A World of Warcraft Story and also Time Gnomes, both made by the evil machinima mastermind Robert Moran, and now the Time Gnomes are back for part 2 of this mayhem! Featuring the resolution to the cliffhanger at the end of the first Time Gnomes, and a lengthly Ming flashback, or two, you'll also enjoy the P-A-L-I-aladin who thinks he is all that. Did we mention that the Time Gnomes have their own website? Well, now you know.

I can't wait to hear that they have Time Gnomes action figures, or that they will hold a TimeGnomeConn in the Eastern Alps, or even get my night elf a Time Gnomes action costume to wear. Come on guys, what is taking so long? I guess I'll just dream until then. Enjoy!

Caption This contest winners!

Miss last week's Caption This contest? Well, even if you missed out on entering, you can still enjoy reading through our winning entries. In first place, with 571 votes, was Lustig, who submitted the following caption:

Hmmm... why does my display say that I'm still in combat?

However, I'm afraid Lustig wasn't eligible to take home a prize, so he's just leaving our contest with the pride of winning. In second place, we have Angus, with 215 votes, who is taking home a 60-day gamecard due to his entry:

Just run through them, they said. No problem, they said. You're a big bad level 70, they said. Pull the entire instance to the front door and we'll AOE grind them all, they said... Cheap blues for enchanting mats, they said. We need to go, they said...

And in third place, we have Trevin, with 211 votes, who is going to be getting a quest-giver hat from J!NX after entering this caption:

Indiana Jones 5: The Temple of Zul'Farrak
"THIS MASK BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!"

Didn't have a chance to enter? Check in with us next Monday for another edition of our Caption This contest!
