WoW Moviewatch: Skullcrusher Mountain

So, unlike many among us, I didn't learn about Jonathan Coulton through sheer cultural osmosis. I learned about him through machinima. In fact, my proto-love of JoCo was entirely created through this video... Skullcrusher Mountain.

Not to be too frank about it, but it took me some time to realize that JoCo wasn't entirely a WoW filk artist. I know that seem crazy but my deep love of Spiffworld's work led me astray. And while I now have a more nuanced understanding of JoCo and Spiffworld, I still look back to Skullcrusher Mountain with the sense that the song was written for WoW.

Anecdote aside, this video is still a legend. Over 1.3 million views testify to its glory. Enjoy your stay!

WoW Moviewatch: The Day After the Cataclysm Ended

With more people killing Deathwing every single day, an inevitable and troubling question keeps coming up: "What will happen to the dragons now?" They gave up their immortality so that we can begin the Time of Man, and we didn't see any white-sailed ships floating to the horizon to explain their scaly fate. So what happened?

Ineffable genius Myndflame tackled that question, grabbing vocal talent Ember Isolte to take the part of the Lifebinder. You can't miss Myndflame's knack for comedic timing and genius reversal of expectations. Finally, we know what happened The Day After The Cataclysm Ended.

WoW Moviewatch: Tanked a Boss

So, rumor has it that a certain burly warrior has returned to tanking. I'm pretty excited to see my good friend back in the sword and board club, so I couldn't let the event to go by without a little shout-out. Mr. Rossi, this one's for you.

Tanked a Boss is an old machinima. It's like five years old. In internet years, that's like prehistoric times. I think we were all playing WoW on TI-8 calculators back then or something. With that in mind, don't judge this video too harshly. Just kick back, let the off-key singing transport you to a magical realm of threat and mitigation, and welcome Mr. Rossi back to our tanking ways.

WoW Moviewatch: Night Elf ERP

Work warning: The song's about ERP. Now, the lyrics are actually fairly tame and the graphics don't show particularly naughty bits, especially when you consider that we're talking about ERP -- but still, it's about ERP.

Night Elf ERP by Sharm and Khayllys tackles that naughty center of WoW's roleplay world: ERP. That's the adult version of roleplay, and I'm not going to explain it much deeper than that. The song manages to avoid being a long homage to Goldshire, though you can't talk about this subject without at least mentioning the inn there.

This video was fantastic. I loved it. It was funny, lighthearted, and gorgeous. It maintains this sense of self-deprecation that takes the bite off its lyrics. Sharm's vocals bring the beauty, and Khallys really put forth some glittering eye candy. My hat's off to you.

WoW Moviewatch: Ninja Raiders

There's a subtle thing in Diablo III that's a welcome relief from PUGs in WoW: you get your own loot. The other person can't even see your loot. While that's a pain in the neck in a coordinated group, it's awesome to avoid troublesome loot ninjas. There may even be a bright, joyous future where loot ninjas are a thing of the past.

Now's the time, therefore, to enjoy that legendary piece of machinima called Ninja Raiders. One of the most famous parody songs WoW has seen, Ninja Raiders is so excellently performed, wondrously animated, and tone-perfectly scripted that it'll get stuck in your brain for a week. Enjoy it now. Won't be too long before the idea of a ninja raider doesn't have much relevance.

WoW Moviewatch: Don't Make Me Get My Main

Don't Make Me Get My Main by Legs and Cranius won first prize in the BlizzCon 2009 machinima contest. It's hard to believe that was nearly three years ago; time flies when you're ganking newbs, I guess.

With Mists of Pandaria looming around the corner like a Defias thug with bad intentions, it's time for us all to remember: That newb you gank today could actually be a PvP superstar. Choose your targets wisely.

WoW Moviewatch: Battlestar Gnomeregan

Let's hit the wayback machine here. And I mean the wayback machine -- we're talking all the way back to January 2007. That's five and a half years ago, folks. Not only was a new science fiction series featuring a man named Adama and his trusty cohorts tearing up the TV channels, a polluted town called Gnomeregan was in desperate need of heroes.

In our little world, that's how this Battlestar-styled trailer came to be. Just remember the next time you join a dungeon group, that warrior might have a little toaster in him.

WoW Moviewatch: Hard Like Heroic

Work warning: This video is pretty much one, long innuendo.

After a crazy week of non-WoW machinima, let's get back to our wheelhouse with one of the first machinima I got into. While the majority of machinima upbringing was at the supple hand of Myndflame, my formative listening experience enjoyed a heavy dose of Nyhm.

Hard Like Heroic is definitely one of Nyhm's best, even after all these years. The lyrics are upbeat, fun, self-deprecating, and spot on with parody goodness. The vocal performance is appropriate to the style, and the whole piece just comes together awesomely. So, let's go do it like a druid in the general channel.

Diablo Moviewatch: Diablo III: Wrath

Work warning: Pretty violent video.

Well, if I didn't know that Diablo III released today, the empty halls of the WoW Insider headquarters would certainly tell me. It's like a ghost town around here. I've not been able to play yet, but that's OK. I've got this incredibly awesome animated short feature to get me by.

Diablo III: Wrath was revealed for the community about a week ago. If you're just now getting your hands on the Diablo universe for the first time, this video gives you a great sense of the mythos. The animation is fantastic and gorgeous. I could almost wish for this to be an ongoing series.

Diablo Moviewatch: Gigolo Witch Test

As we all sit around our Basic Campfires, caught rapt by breathless anticipation, let's take a moment and celebrate the upcoming release of Diablo III with a funny machinima.

Olibith created the Gigolo Witch Test using the the first custom machinima tool made for the game. While that might not sound like a big deal, that makes this Gigolo Witch Test the first full-blown, tooled machinima for Diablo III. (That's why we featured it on WoW Moviewatch back in the day.)

So here's hoping we won't be so sad and lonely for much longer, and we all get to enjoy the silky-smooth launch of Diablo III.

Evil has returned! 1.2 million WoW players are getting Diablo 3 for free thanks to the Annual Pass. You can get prepared for the evil with WoW Insider's launch coverage. From the lore of Diablo, to the important blue posts and the basics of Diablo gameplay, we'll get you on the inside track for the return of evil.

WoW Moviewatch: Pandarendansen v2

So, we presented the first version of this seizure-inducing insanity without comment. But you weren't satisfied. Half of you were like, "You're missing dance moves." The other half were like, "Oh, sweet hairy panda, we need more."

Machinima master Nananaea heard your cries, but unlike vaguely splotched superheroes from the past, she did not whisper no. She whispered yes, and she went to the huge effort of creating further animation and putting out this video. I can't stop watching it. It's hypnotizing.

WoW Moviewatch: Wable - Episode 4

Work warning: A bit of cursing and such, but nothing you've not seen before if you spend any time on the official forums.

The 4th episode of Wable has been released by Hybrim Entertainment, and it is hilarious. I don't know what it is about the style or method that struck my funny bone, but I actually spent a little time giggling out loud. (A literal laugh out loud is asking a bit much. I prefer to chuckle slightly, under my beard, like the humor-jaded cynic I am. One might say I only laugh with irony.)

The general idea is that Wable is Warcraft + Cable. Then you do some channel surfing during the show, see a couple of sarcastic punch lines, and then get something like a pun thrown in. And, hey -- who doesn't love a good Illidan joke here and there?

WoW Moviewatch: Caterwauling Choir

I love stuff like this, but I should give you a fair warning. If you're looking for skillful singing and amazing harmonies, skip this video. It's not for you. If you want a heartwarming tribute in which a guild offers cheers and support to its members -- this is the video to brighten your day.

Rather than try and explain what's going on in Caterwauling Choir, here's what the creator had to say:

Adia & her husband Bugs whom have been training very hard in a sport called Dragon Boat racing. They had their very first race on Saturday 5/5/12. The guild wanted to do something special to cheer them on. We came up with this short video.

While the singing isn't expert, this is just the kind of virtual hug the WoW community is known for. My hat's off to the Caterwauling Choir. Nice job, guys.

WoW Moviewatch: WoW vs. Facebook

Besieged on all sides by misunderstanding about WoW addiction, Wowcrendor tackles the relative value of WoW vs Facebook. By using a rhetorical Straw Girlfriend, the characters talk about how playing WoW isn't really much different from chilling on Facebook or watching TV.

This is an argument I'm pretty familiar with. While I love a few particular television shows (what's up, Winchester brothers, how you doin'?), I'm not a big fan of the tube. In general, I like to be a more active participant in my entertainment. Whether that's walking the dog or playing WoW, I prefer action and don't like passive behavior. This is the point Wowcrendor is driving at -- WoW is no less or more prone to negative behavior than Facebook, TV, or other culturally typical activities.

WoW Moviewatch: The Panda Exterminator

It's been a while since we've had a new Oxhorn machinima. Oxhorn is known for his engaging music, tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, and tight comedic stories. His new video, The Panda Exerminator, doesn't disappoint.

The Panda Exterminator features two parts. The first is a short skit about the titular Panda Exterminator. Enraged by the encroaching cuteness of pandaren, the exterminator seeks to keep the Horde pure and fierce. The second part is an awesome song about the pandas. It's obviously meant as parody, but it's completely hilarious. The song is available on iTunes; if you're anything like me, you'll be downloading it pretty quickly.
