In patch 5.2, automatic flight path discovery is a thing of the past

Automatic flight paths are a thing of the past
If you've been on the leveling treadmill -- or if you frequent the WoW forums -- chances are you've noticed that after patch 5.2, you stopped automatically discovering new flight paths. For those of you (myself included) who loved this feature, it's unfortunately an intentional change. According to everyone's favorite floating skull, Zarhym, the auto-discovery of flight paths -- introduced way back in patch 4.2 in June 2011 -- was never intentional.

So why's it waited so long? Again, according to Zarhym, it was a complicated problem to crack -- and low on the priority list.

While I mourn the loss of what was one of my favorite Cataclysm-era features -- the run through the Wetlands to pick up the flight path at Menethil Harbor used to be a killer, literally -- I can't complain too much. After all, with mounts starting at level 20, hearthstones on a 15 minute cooldown (with the right guild perks), and flight paths scattered conveniently around the world, getting around is easier than it's ever been, even without automatically discovering new flight paths.

Breakfast Topic: What's your patch day philosophy?

Breakfast Topic What's your patch day philosophy
If you follow WoW Insider, I'm sure you've noticed me going on about patch 5.2's dinosaur additions. (And, umm, if you haven't, well, let's just say I like dinosaurs and leave it at that, shall we?) But as to actually playing on the Isle of Giants? I'm content to wait a while, which is in part because I haven't had a lot of time this week and in part because dealing with crowded zones isn't always fun. (It's also why I didn't log on to Diablo 3 on launch day and why I've yet to pick up SimCity -- both of which I think have proven to be good calls!)

I'm pretty sure there's no right answer here, but what about you, fellow WoW-ers? When a new expansion drops or a new patch appears, do you have to be the first one there, racing to the level cap? Or do you prefer to take it easy and get there when you get there? But whatever you all are doing, I'm going to sit here with my Romantic Picnic Basket and a good book and catch up with you later!

Five reasons patch 5.2 will pull you back into WoW

Five reasons patch 52 will pull you back into WoW
So you quit playing WoW. That's okay: we understand. All of us here at WoW Insider have been playing the game an awfully long time, and we know it can get old sometimes. Once you've played through all the content and there's nothing but the same dailies and the same raids over and over again... well, there's only so many times you can go through the same content before it starts to lose its shine. We don't judge. However, even if you've moved on to new games, Blizzard's latest content bonanza might be enough to come back to WoW (at least for a little while). So let's talk about why patch 5.2 is worth coming back for.

A huge array of new content with Isle of Thunder and Throne of Thunder
We'll start with the obvious: patch 5.2 introduces a brand new zone to explore. The Isle of Thunder will unlock in stages as players on your realm complete daily quests (not unlike the Isle of Quel'Danas in The Burning Crusade). Would-be heroes join forces with one of two new factions, The Kirin-Tor Offensive (Alliance), led by Jaina Proudmoore, and Sunreaver Onslaught (Horde), led by led by Lor'themar Theron. And though we know new factions and their associated dailies sound like yet another grind, the new faction quests will at least be fun the first time. And, as with all factions, with reputation comes reward, and we're pretty sure everyone enjoys new loot.

Patch 5.2 official patch notes

Patch 5.2 is here, and we've got the official patch notes for you to enjoy. Some of the major highlights from this major content patch include:
  • New Daily Quest Hub: Isle of Thunder
  • Wrathion is determined to know the origin and source of Mogu power, and Azeroth's mightiest heroes will aid the Black Prince in finding out what it is. The search for information will take players into the depths of the Thunder King's Palace, and pit them against trials of perseverance and skill. Along the way, they'll unlock the secrets to a new legendary metagem, the Crown of the Heavens.
  • Players that have grown attached to working the land at Sunsong Ranch can now acquire the farm from Farmer Yoon via a quest. The farmhouse becomes a rest point like an Inn, where the player can bind and instantly log out. Work orders will pour into the farm from factions across Pandaria, and completing a work order will earn a reputation boost with the issuing faction.
  • Throne of Thunder raid bosses in Normal and Heroic difficulties have a chance of dropping items with the Thunderforged designation. Thunderforged items are 6 item levels higher than their Normal or Heroic counterparts and will drop more frequently in 25-player raids.
  • To encourage Raid Finder groups to persevere, each time an Raid Finder group wipes on a boss fight all players in the group receives a stacking buff that increases health, damage dealt, and healing done by 5% (up to a maximum of 10 stacks). This buff is cleared once the boss has been killed.
  • Satchels obtained via the Raid Finder now have a chance to contain additional rewards, including: consumables, Spirits of Harmony, rare pets or mounts, and Raid Finder versions of Normal and Heroic difficulty zone drops that were previously unavailable from Raid Finder encounters!
  • Warlocks can now undertake a solo adventure that culminates with the ability to change the color of their Fire spells to appear Fel green. The quest begins for those Warlocks determined or fortunate enough to have laid their hands on the fabled Codex of Xerrath.
  • Players in low-level Battlegrounds will have their effective level raised to the maximum level allowed in that Battleground bracket. Players' base stats and spells are scaled accordingly, and are treated as the same level when determining hits, misses, and critical effect chance.

Patch 5.2 Gear Previews: Season 13, tier 15, and Throne of Thunder

Patch 52 Gear Previews Season 13, tier 15, and Throne of Thunder
If you've been waiting for some new WoW loot to drool over, today Blizzard posted previews of season 13's "Tyrannical" PvP armor sets. Season 12 will be coming to an end on March 5, making the Tyrannical sets your new PvP goal. Though we have to say, the paladin set looks kind of dangerous, like you might put someone's eye out accidentally with those giant blades attached to your shoulders. (It reminds us of warrior's tier 2 Wrath set, which also seemed like tempting fate. What if you tripped?) So, PvP paladins, please be careful and try not to run with scissors -- or those huge shoulders -- okay?

For PvEers, Blizzard also has previews of tier 15, which will be arriving with patch 5.2 -- that is to say, soon. Thankfully, Blizzard has finally taken the preventive measure of putting bells on the priests so they can no longer sneak up on you. (Apologies to stealth-loving priests everywhere.)

And if that's not enough preview action, our friends at Wowhead also have Throne of Thunder boss drops from the PTR (if you're not seeing them, click to sort "By Boss"). Happy looting, everyone!

Patch 5.2 PTR: Patch notes update for Feb 25

Patch 52 PTR Patch notes update for Feb 25
As we draw closer to the release of patch 5.2, changes continue to be made. Another round of patch notes have just hit the 5.2 PTR. This time around, the list of changes to classes and quests is relatively small. However, there are a ton of updates for professions of all kinds -- and one interesting change to AoE spells and abilities.
  • The area damage cap is now 20 targets instead of 10.
  • Players that have a high fishing skill now have a chance to fish up new pets! The Pet Journal has clues on where these new pets can be found. Happy hunting -- er, fishing!
  • New raid and PvP patterns have been added for tailors. Tailors can find these new patters with the daily Imperial Silk cooldown.
  • Players can now participate in Pet Battle duels while in the Throne of Thunder, just in case you'd rather take a break from certain troll doom and instead focus on fluffy critters.
You can see the full list of patch notes at the official site, but if you'd just like a list of the new changes, follow after the break for a consolidated list.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Patch notes update for Feb 19

Patch 52 PTR Patch notes update for Feb 19
Blizzard has posted another updated set of patch notes for the 5.2 PTR. This time around, the list of updates is relatively small, but there are still plenty of interesting tidbits to be found. Included are class changes for a few different classes, as well as some updates and additions to the list of features that will be available in patch 5.2.
  • Satchels obtained via the Raid Finder now have a chance to contain additional fun items. This includes Raid Finder versions of Normal and Heroic difficulty zone drops that were previously unobtainable from LFR difficulty.
  • Players of the same faction will get shared credit for Pandaria world bosses -- this includes Sha of Anger and Galleon, as well as the new world bosses in 5.2.
  • Buying the farm has officially been changed to reflect that you will be taking over the farm rather than purchasing it. Players must be exalted with the Tillers and have unlocked all 16 farm plots before this option will be made available.
You can see the full list of patch notes at the official site, but we've made life a little easier and just compiled a list of all of the changes after the break.

WRUP: Patch 5.2 prep

On the the primordial world of "Urth", a primitive race known as "hooman" is busying itself with preparations for an upcoming ritual event. The ritual, which occurs once every few months, is known as "pach'dey", and it brings with it a palpable feeling of excitement for these simple-minded bipeds. This pach'dey looks particularly bountiful for the hoomans, who look forward to seeing exotic new animals, new structures, and even new armaments by the time the ritual is over.

We asked the hoomans how they're preparing for pach'dey.

Patch 5.2 targeted for release in last week of February

In Bashiok's recent post on the WoW site, he mentioned that while Blizzard in general doesn't want to give out patch release dates ahead of time, they are targeting patch 5.2 for release the last week of February.

Keep in mind that things can and do change. Patches have been delayed before due to unforeseen bugs or game mechanics issues, and they will be delayed again. It's common and part of life in a game like WoW that's constantly under development.

But that being said, it's nice to know what Blizzard wants to do. Just take it all with a healthy grain of maelstrom salt until you see an official release announcement.

Patch 5.2 PTR: LFR testing starts today, open through the weekend

I'm excited for the new raids, but I'm potentially more excited for a new LFR. It's a great way to run alts through and get some nice gear, all while enjoying the game from a different perspective than your main.

LFR on the patch 5.2 PTR will be open today through this weekend, and if your main or alt doesn't have the necessary iLevel requirements on the PTR, you can grab some gear from a testing vendor and be all set. Watcher explains in his full post:

We're planning on opening the LFR wings of the Throne of Thunder raid sequentially, beginning on Thursday, February 7, by 11am PST (2pm EST, 8pm CET). We will leave LFR open through the weekend, so hop on the PTR, check it out, and share your feedback!

The item level requirement for the 5.2 LFR sections is 480 -- if you can't meet this threshold, note that there are vendors with epic PvP and PvE set pieces that may help you reach it.

I want to emphasize here that Blizzard really does need your feedback on LFR. The designers listen very closely to what the community says, and a well thought out and reasoned argument does a ton of good.

We'll have our own feedback and LFR boss guide soon, so stay tuned!

Patch 5.2 PTR: Killing Throne of Thunder's Dark Animus

Patch 52 PTR Deanimating the Dark Animus
Dark Animus is the ninth boss in the Throne of Thunder, followed by Iron Qon, Twin Consorts, and Lei Shen. It's preceded by some fairly stern trash, and on entering the room players are greeted by the image seen above. It's all a tad confusing to the uninitiated, but what you're essentially fighting against is that red, gloopy substance. The story goes as follows:
During his reign, Lei Shen labored to build a mechanical servant that would defend his citadel without fear. When this experiment failed, rage took hold of the Thunder King. He poured this negative emotion into his next, amd most successful creation: the Dark Animus. To this day, the ornate construct observes its duty, empowered by the mysterious substance at the heart of all the Mogu flesh-shaping experiments.
This fight is definitely one of the most interesting ones I've attended on the PTR. Again, I was privileged to join Lore from TankSpot and his guild Months Behind for testing on my restoration shaman.

The fight begins with the spherical blob you see in the center of the room. It will not aggro onto nearby players until struck, but when aggroed, it will explode, activating a number of the smallest robots visible above by powering them with Anima.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Defeating the Twin Consorts in the Throne of Thunder

Patch 52 PTR Twin Consorts
Lu'lin and Suen are rumored to be the only known female mogu that exist. These two are the last bosses that stand between you and the Thunder King himself. In the spirit of attempting to badly pronounce boss names, I believe Suen is pronounced "Swen" (and not Sue-n).

Interestingly enough, our iLevel was scaled up to 517 for this test. In many of the previous test encounters, we were at 502. That should offer some idea of what the group's gear progression should be at when they challenge the Twin Consorts.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Patch notes update for Jan. 30

Patch 52 PTR Patch notes update for Jan 30
Blizzard just posted an updated set of patch notes for the 5.2 PTR. Included in the latest round of updates are the continuation of Wrathion's legendary quest chain, some class changes, a whole mess of Pet Battle changes, and a few interesting tweaks to LFR that might just make that issue of players dropping groups a little less likely to occur.
  • To encourage LFR groups to stick around, each time a Raid Finder group wipes on a boss fight, all players will get a stacking buff that increases health, damage, and healing done by 5%. This stacks up to 10 times.
  • Lorewalker Cho has two new tales to tell -- Dagger in the Dark, and A Little Patience. As of 5.2, both factions will be able to complete both scenarios. No more faction limit!
  • Characters that have attained titles from the Rated Battleground system (Centurion, Knight-Champion, High Warlord, Grand Marshal, etc) will now be able to purchase old PvP items requiring those titles.
You can see the full list of patch notes at the official site, but we've made life a little easier and just compiled a list of all of the changes after the break.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Clarifications on reputation changes

Draztal posted some clarification of the faction/reputation changes happening in patch 5.2, and how the work orders interact with them. A lot of people are at least somewhat pleased with these changes, since they're giving players a slow and steady non-daily quest way to earn rep.

The main points:
  • Each day, you earn 750 reputation with the first heroic, and 325 reputation with the first scenario.
  • There will be no valor rewards for the new dailies faction, only the raid faction.
  • Shado-Pan Assult reputation can be earned through Raid Finder, but after a certain point only boss kills reward faction rep.
  • Work Orders require you to be exalted with The Tillers and to have unlocked all plots.
  • Work Orders will be available for most 5.0/5.1 factions, but will not include the Black Prince.
It's necessary to repeat the mantra that these are all changes being done on the PTR and they could change. Now I personally wouldn't count on these modifications changing too much, they seem to be very fleshed out at this point, but still, anything's possible.

Draztal's full post after the break.

Patch 5.2 PTR: More class and set bonus iteration from Ghostcrawler

As testing continues on the patch 5.2 PTR, so dose the iteration from the design team. Some of the highlights from this round:
  • Druid Maim damage has been increased by 100%
  • Druid Cyclone range nerfed a bit due to PvP
  • Warlock 4pc bonus now increases Demonic Fury from all spells by 10%
  • Some changes with Arms warriors were rolled back
Ghostcrawler and his team also note at the end of the piece that these design iterations are typical for a PTR. Moreso many of the changes they make on their internal builds never go live, so even though this list is large, in some respects, it could be a heck of a lot worse. Ghostcrawler is right when he says this is pretty normal; since they started making directed design comments after each downtime, this level of iteration is par for the course in just about every aspect of the game's design.

Ghostcrawler's full post after the break.
