Zarhym on the legendary cloak and its boss

There's a number of people are concerned about needing the legendary cloak to fight the Fire-God Ordos, a special boss accessible on the Timeless Isle. Those people with the concern raise the point that this is essentially cutting off a significant portion of the game to those without the cloak -- or at least what they feel is a significant portion of the game.

Except, it's not a big portion of the game. It's one boss, and a rather insignificant one (in the grand scheme of things) at that. Further, players that have put in the year long effort to actually get the legendary cloak deserve some sort of reward for their troubles. And while the awesome cloak is certainly part of that reward, getting to experience a different boss is a nice added bonus.

Zarhym makes this point well in a post on the forms, and it's worth taking a few minutes to read his words. He also makes a great point at the end -- getting the legendary now through SoO farming is just as viable as working on it over the past year (and it's entirely possible to do that). Now it might be a point of pride to have worked on it over the long haul, but still, he is correct in saying it's just as cool no matter when you pick it up.

Zarhym's full post after the break.

Tomorrow is going to be kind of amazing, and here's why

I'm pretty excited about tomorrow's patch.

You know the last time that I said those words? Five or six years ago -- I can't remember. It's been a long time since a patch in WoW has gotten me to want to log in and find out what's happening. In patch 5.4 Blizzard is delivering something that we haven't yet seen, and that's a patch without the major spoiler known to people outside Blizzard HQ.

I mentioned on Twitter last week that on Tuesday we're going to find out answers to a few things:
  1. What happens to Garrosh? Is he really going to die? WoW has been known to play fast ones on us before. People either like to be pretend dead or come back from it as a Zombie Kael'thas. Is Garrosh's fate really death or does someone, or something, else have a plan more sinister?
  2. Who is the next leader of the Horde? We're either going to find out tomorrow, or we're going to find out in the next patch (comments from Blizzard designers have been mixed). Either way the landscape is going to change drastically.
  3. What will the Horde think of the Alliance after the regime change? Will the Alliance be greeted as liberators, or has the Alliance just thrust themselves into the middle of a brewing civil war? We already have some inkling to this answer, but I'll bet a paycheck the cinematic is going to tell us a helluva lot.
And that's the other part of this story ... the cinematic. No one has seen it. We know it's out there, but it's encrypted in the data files and locked tight away. Someone has the key to this, and when they unlock it, it's going to be big.

Everything there is to love about flex raiding

Ghostcrawler sums up everything there is to love about flex raiding

As is unfortunately usual in a Ghostcrawler twitter conversation, it starts out with a troll trying to get under the skin of WoW's lead system designer, and ends with Ghostcrawler making a point that everyone should hear. This time it struck home. Flex raiding is not going to be there for the hard core guild that wants to get world firsts, it's not going to be there for the people that want to raid just once every few months, and it's not going to be there as a cakewalk for newbies to just waltz into and get some epics.

It's going to be there for the former raid leader like me, that had no choice in The Burning Crusade but to have a "hard core" guild and all the drama and decision making that came along with it. Back in the day (note that I'm using the phrase here not as a positive) in order to see the end game content of Illidan, Archimonde, and hell, even Kael'thas, you had to have a guild that was well put together and full of dedicated raiders.

A dedicated raider was someone who farmed 10 to 20 hours a week, came prepared with their own food, flasks, and other assorted gadgetry. A dedicated raider read up on all the stats, knew the fights inside and out, and was ready to adept to new situations on a moment's notice. A dedicated raider also knew that we lived and died by the numbers. If you were not putting out 1,000 DPS (at the time), you were on the docket to be cut. When we entered Sunwell Plateau you had to be producing 1,500 DPS on Brutullas or you were going to be sat, and probably replaced in the long run.

A dedicated raider might have been the nicest guy in the world, but if they were not performing the way they needed to, then they didn't have a spot on the team. Sorry pal, we like you, but you can't mash your hand against your keyboard fast enough. You're cut.

Reminder: Connected Realms will not be turned on immediately

From the Department of Friendly World of Warcraft Reminders comes a note on the pending patch 5.4, scheduled to drop next Tuesday: connected realms will not be turned on at the release of patch 5.4. Instead, they're going to be turned on gradually and fine-tuned as time goes on.

We've been seeing a lot of confusion over this, and rightly so -- it's a major feature of the patch. However it's not uncommon for Blizzard to slow walk things out the gate, they do this with raiding and LFR, and in the case of a major game change that is essentially merging servers, it needs to be done extremely carefully.

No doubt that when it does get turned on most of the world will erupt in one form or another. We're pretty sure you'll be able to hear it, and we'll be covering aforementioned eruption here as well.

Battlefield Barrens Reminder: Ending soon!

Patch 5.4 will be dropping in two weeks, and that means that the battle in the Barrens will be going away, forever. All of your Radical Mojos will need to before the patch drops, or else they'll become worthless. There are a couple things that are sticking around, but they're the exception (the pet, 24-slot bag, and Brawler's Guild item).

Gear wise everything will be going away as well. Blizzard has made it clear that there are no plans to reintroduce the gear right now, for cosmetic reasons or otherwise, and I'd take them at their word. People have speculated, including myself, that it'd not be out of the picture for them to be introduced as Darkmoon Faire items at some point, but if Blizzard agrees with that, they're not letting on. Either way, as of this writing you have two more chances to get the gear you want -- so double time it over to the Barrens for your grinding!

Crithto made a post on the forums concerning exactly what's happening, and you can read his full blue post after the break.

Patch 5.4 PTR: Raid testing for Thursday, August 29

Patch 54 PTR Raid testing for Thursday, August 29
The flurry of heroic raid testing continues tomorrow, with more bosses scheduled for patch 5.4 PTR testing. Players looking to test their mettle against the 25-man heroic versions of the Immerseus, Iron Juggernaut and Siegecrafter Blackfuse encounters will have their chance to do so throughout the day tomorrow on the PTR servers. Remember -- if you've been testing flex or normal modes of these encounters, they may look a little different on heroic mode.

Players that wish to test out this content should log on at the appropriate times listed for each boss encounter. Don't worry too much about the gear you bring in, it will be scaled to match the difficulty of the encounter -- but bring your best game, because heroic bosses are hardly a joke. And as always, be sure to leave feedback in the appropriate threads on the official PTR forums once you're done testing content.

Read on for more details, including the full schedule of times for individual raid bosses.

Patch 5.4 PTR: Raid testing for Wednesday, August 28

Patch 54 PTR Raid testing for Wednesday, August 28
Heroic 25-man raid testing continues tomorrow on the patch 5.4 PTR servers. For players interested in testing heroic Siege of Orgrimmar content, both the Sha of Pride and Malkorok encounters will be available over the course of tomorrow for the purposes of testing. As with all PTR raid encounters, players should leave feedback on the encounters in the appropriate threads on the official PTR forums.

If you have yet to explore the patch 5.4 PTR, you can copy a character by logging into your Battle.net account on the official website, or you can simply create a pre-made level 90 character if that sounds like a better option to you. Gear will be scaled to match the difficulty of the encounters, so don't worry about being under-geared for the content, either.

Read on for more details, including the full schedule of times for individual raid bosses.

Patch 5.4 PTR: Raid testing for Tuesday, August 27

Patch 54 PTR Raid testing for Tuesday, August 27
If you've been wanting to test out heroic modes in the Siege of Orgrimmar before patch 5.4 hits live servers on September 10, now's your chance. Tomorrow the PTR will be featuring 25-man heroic difficulty testing of three of the fights in the new raid. Fallen Protectors, Kor'kron Dark Shaman and General Nazgrim will all be available for testing over the course of the day tomorrow. Keep in mind that this is heroic difficulty, so expect the fights to look a little different than their normal or flex mode counterparts.

Remember that these PTR bosses are open for testing purposes -- don't forget to leave your feedback for the encounters in the appropriate threads on the official PTR forums. Don't worry about bringing your own raid group -- although it is helpful, it's not required. If you need one, just hang around the raid entrance in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, as it's likely there will be more than a few raid groups looking for people to fill spots. And if you're worried about gear, don't be -- all gear will be scaled to the appropriate ilvl for the encounter.

Read on for more details, including the full schedule of times for individual raid bosses.

Patch 5.4 confirmed for release on September 10th

Patch 54 confirmed for release on September 10
While we spoke about it earlier, Blizzard posted the above picture on their Facebook page letting everyone know that indeed, patch 5.4 is dropping on the 10th.

So far the reaction to this news has been mostly positive -- people are getting a bit more time to finish up the content they want. This is also a good time to do any Battlefield Barrens things you may want to do... it's not going to be there in two weeks!

Patch 5.4 PTR: Raid testing for Friday, August 16

Patch 54 PTR Raid testing for August 16
Patch 5.4 may be up on the background downloader, but that doesn't mean there isn't more raid testing to do! Testing for the Siege of Orgrimmar bosses Sha of Pride, Kor'kron Dark Shaman, General Nazgrim and Malkorok takes place tomorrow throughout the day, this time on 25-man Normal difficulty. Not in a 25-man raid guild? Not a problem -- just log onto the PTR at the appropriate times, hang out in the Vale and you're likely to see plenty of people looking for folks to test the raid content.

Keep in mind that these are PTR bosses open for testing purposes, and leave your feedback for these encounters in the appropriate threads on the official PTR forums. Gear, as always, will be scaled inside the raid for the purposes of testing content. If you'd like to participate, you can copy one of your existing characters to the PTR via your Battle.net account, or simply create a level 90 premade character to test with.

Read on for more details, including the full schedule of times for individual raid bosses.

Breakfast Topic: When can we expect patch 5.4?

We've been talking about patch 5.4 for a good while now, but with frequent changes still happening on the PTR it doesn't seem likely to be heading our way just yet -- especially with Ghostcrawler commenting that the "tuning phase" on the PTR is yet to begin. However, Blizzard does love to surprise us, so it's hard to say with any certainty when patch 5.4 will appear on the live realms... well, at least any certainty beyond Blizzard's trademark promise of soon.

But when do you, dear readers, expect patch 5.4 to grace the live servers? This week? Next? Even later? Let us know what you think in our poll and explain why in the comments!

When will we get patch 5.4?
This week.168 (2.5%)
This month.1559 (23.3%)
Next month.4138 (61.9%)
Even later.819 (12.3%)

Patch 5.4 PTR: Flexible Mode testing open this weekend

Patch 54 PTR Flexible Mode testing open this weekend
If you've been wanting to test Flexible Mode raiding on the patch 5.4 PTR servers, now's your chance. The Underhold wing of the Siege of Orgrimmar raid will be open all weekend, continuing into Monday on the PTR servers. Players testing the content may queue with anywhere between 10-25 players by using the same interface for finding groups for dungeons, scenarios, or LFR difficulty raids.

Unlike LFR, Flexible mode raids have all the same mechanics as Normal mode bosses. However, the difficulty of the encounters have been tuned to adjust in health and damage depending on how many players are participating in the raid. The Underhold contains Malkorok, Spoils of Pandaria, and Thok the Bloodthirsty, giving players plenty of opportunity to test the challenges of Flexible raiding. If you're interested in testing the content, you can either copy an existing character to the PTR via your Battle.net account, or create a level 90 premade. If you're planning on testing the content, don't forget to leave feedback in the official thread on the PTR forums!

Patch 5.4 PTR: Countless cosmetic items on the Timeless Isle

Patch 54 PTR Cosmetic items on the Timeless Isle ANY
If you're one of the many players who don't like to spend real cash on virtual items (like Blizzard's recently added cosmetic helms), you'll be glad to know that patch 5.4's Timeless Isle is packed with cool cosmetic items that won't cost you anything but time. And by time, we mean grinding -- though with the array of interesting events and rare spawns to be found on the Timeless Isle, it could be more entertaining than your average grinding experience. So what's on offer? Mounts, pets, vanity gear, disguises, and odd gizmos of all sorts. There's so many, in fact, that it's hard to narrow the list down to our favorites, but these are some of the most interesting:
  • Weather stones -- which come in sunset, rain, blizzard, and ashen varieties -- can be used to change the weather in the area.
  • Cauterizing Core, an item with 20 charges which allows you to resurrect on death with 20% health and mana.
  • Pi'jiu Brews, which summon a spectral monk -- mistweaver, windwalker, or brewmaster -- to fight for you for 10 minutes.
  • Faintly-Glowing Herb, which restores 50,000 health per second for 10 seconds. If that sounds overpowered, it's probably because it's a BoA and has a duration of only a day -- so if you want them, you'll have to farm them yourself.
As to how to get this gear, a lot of it comes from rare drops, rare spawns, or events, but some is bought with Bloody Coins or Shaohao reputation. And this list is only scratching the surface -- check out Wowhead for the full list of vanity items you're likely to find on the Timeless Isle as well as how to get them for yourself come patch day.

Patch 5.4 PTR: More details on the Celestial Tournament

Patch 54 PTR More details on the Celestial Tournament
If you're interested in knowing more about patch 5.4's Celestial Tournament, Wowhead has the full details on this PTR petstraviganza. And while PTR details are always subject to change, here's what we know so far:
  • You can compete in the tournament once a week through the quest The Celestial Tournament.
  • The tournament has two rounds: in the first you fight against 3 pet trainers with 3 legendary battle pets each and in the second you're up against 4 legendary elite battle pets.
  • These opponents are random and will change week to week, but expect to see familiar faces like Blingtron 4000 and Wrathion.
  • For winning, you get a Celestial Coin, which can be used to buy unique pets and other items.
Pet battle enthusiasts will also be pleased to know that patch 5.4 is packed with new battle pets: Wowhead has found over 20. Of the many new available pets, though, we're most on the lookout for our own Lil' Bling, who will clearly dazzle opponents into submission. Need even more juicy details about pet battles on the PTR? Check out Wowhead and WarcraftPets for the rest.

Patch 5.4 PTR: New mounts from the Siege of Orgrimmar

PTR files are the gift that keeps on giving: today AdriaCraft posted videos of two mounts from the patch files, which we expect will be drops in the Siege of Ogrimmar raid. On show are the Kor'kron Proto-Drake and the Iron Juggernaut. The Juggernaut may actually be the Kor'kron Juggernaut Wowhead lists as dropping from Garrosh, but we can't yet say with certainty where either of these drop, so if you're desperate to nab one, stay tuned for more info.

If you're in this post for the eye candy, check the videos embedded after the break for a close look at what could be your next mount!
