Around Azeroth: The secret life of NPCs

Submitter Killax of Shadowsong (US-A) was dueling some of his Horde friends in the Dalaran sewers, for some ungodly reason, when he was feared through a wall into an empty arena. His blood elf pal blinked to follow him, and wound up in the same location. Suddenly, a draenei shaman and a blood elf warlock spawned before them, and proceeded to do battle under their respective flags. I wonder what else the NPCs get up to when they think we're not watching? It might be best if we never know.

Around Azeroth, Beta Edition: In the hushing dusk, under a swollen silver moon

The science of Azeroth is confusing as all get-out. How do snowy zones co-exit next to jungles? If Azeroth is round, why is it always day and night at the same time on each side of the world? Why gnomes? (Not why do gnomes do anything, just ... why gnomes?) I don't even want to consider the astronomy. Instead, let's just admire this picture of the Pale Lady in eclipse during Warlords of Draenor, taken by beta tester Nganga of Pact of War on Silver Hand (US-H). Don't think of the logic! Just look at the shiny lights.

Around Azeroth: A parting shot

"It can be hard, sometimes, to not ascribe emotions or feelings to pixels in a video game," writes submitter Gimmlette. "If the designers have truly done their job, we will have an emotional connection to an NPC or an event; a connection not of the 'OMG! They're changing everything!' sort. Vol'jin being announced as leader of the Horde is something that produced emotion.

Spectacular Death (A-Llane) did an event where they went around the world killing the bosses their raid leader, Tarsan, wanted to see die. He's stepping down, as the Army is sending him to Belgium, which will make leading raids a bit frustrating. So a bunch of us cleared some raids up to the final boss. We killed a boss and then moved on. One of those was Kil'Jaeden in Sunwell. With 18 guild members, KJ didn't last very long. A number of people had never seen him and I think his arrival is one of the best boss arrivals in the game. We offed him in about three and a half minutes.
I take a lot of screenshots of guild events and this was no different. Here, KJ is being pulled back into the Sunwell. That's Tarsan to the right. Shoulders on fire, KJ is struggling to stay outside, to not be consumed. It's just a game, but this photo struck me. Is he thinking of lost causes? Is he thinking of his imprisonment and doom?>After he disappeared, we started wondering; Warlords is about the draenei and the orcs. Burning Crusades brought us blood elves and their story. Will they figure into Warlords at any time?

And finally, the answer to the unspoken question is no. Thori'dal did not drop. That would have been a great stepping down gift."

Around Azeroth: Somewhere down the crazy river

Beta tester Nganga of Pact of War on Silver Hand (US-H) snapped this screenshot of a jungle boat in Tanaan while playing the Warlords of Draenor beta. I was suddenly snapped back ten years in time, to getting drunk with Calaf in a crappy little apartment and watching Apocalypse Now all night. That's not a movie I recommend watching while intoxicated, by the way. unless you're a huge fan of nightmares. The horror ... the horror ...

Around Azeroth: You wear it well, a little old-fashioned but that's all right

"I think I may have answered the age-old question of how naga wear pants when I found this guy wearing my transmog set today," writes submitter Razelka of Spectacular Death on Llane (US-A). "He was a little ... unwilling to show it off at first, but a few threatening minion corpses later and he agreed to this photo with me, his new 'friend'. Who do you think wears it better?"

Around Azeroth: Mixed messages

"Should I ask why Caer Darrow (AKA Scholomance) - y'know, the big scary haunted evil castle with the big evil skulls on its banner - has that bright cheery wreath right in the middle of the big scary evil skull imagery?" writes submitter Arugadh of The Brotherhood of Iron on Wyrmrest Accord (US-A). "And to really take it over the top, right behind the wreath is a cage hanging from the archway ... a cage that has a moldering, rotting skeleton in it. Yeah. Talk about conflicting symbolism, Blizz."

Around Azeroth: Every job they offer is to keep you out the dock

"Since being a healer didn't quite work out so well, I thought I would get some practice at being a tank," writes submitter Demonmoose of The Outcast on The Maelstrom (EU-A). "To do this, I, err ... 'borrowed' some tanking gear from a friendly paladin and got some practice. I brought my void lord in case things go south. Let's hope I'm good enough for HC Garrosh. if not, I have those souls from my healing days to keep me alive."

Around Azeroth: We'll fight for no country but we'll die for good pay

As much as I love the goblin starting area, I never really bought the story of how they came to join the Horde. Such a crafty, cunning race of people, and they decide their allegiance by joining up with the first group they run into? You'd expect them to at least make the Alliance and the Horde bid for their services. They might have considered it for a while. Submitter Malveragene of Windrunner (US-H) was questing in Icecrown when he saw that the Alliance gunship, from the right angle, strongly resembled a goblin. I guess Garrosh pays better.

Around Azeroth: Let's talk terms of surrender

"My group was helping Lilian cleanse Scholomance from its corruption, but it seems both Lilian and my group underestimated Gandling's power," writes submitter Faranth of Bizarre Adventures on Azralon (US-H). "He called a bunch of henchmen and together they vanquished Lilian. We though she would rise up again, fight the necromancer, but she did not. All hope of breaking his impenetrable bone shield was lost. There was nothing we could do against his magic without Lilian's help. Soon we fell to the same fate of many careless adventures who've been there before."

Around Azeroth: Let my love open the door

This picture of Ashran, taken by beta tester Nganga of Pact of War on Silver Hand (US-H), shows the prettiest area that anyone's ever viciously complained about being forced to spend time in. I'm not sure if this is from the PvP area or one of the faction cities, considering that all I've been able to do in the beta is go through the Dark Portal and get disconnected on the other side. But wherever it is, I'm looking forward to hanging out there. Might want to watch out for that big flower on the left, though -- that thing looks metallic and pointy.

Around Azeroth: Ashes, ashes, we all fall down

"Once again, Spectacular Death (A-Llane) is providing an answer to a question you didn't know you had," writes guild leader Gimmlette. "Rednekwichdr wondered just how many people can spin on a fire pole at one time. We were all too happy to answer that. We got a dozen going at once. People discovered that they would get kicked off the pole before the seconds were up to get the full buff so perhaps a dozen is the limit. This probably requires more study. We did have several who needed pole dancing lessons. We shied them away from Ollivor, who offered his own take on pole dancing. Screenshot is not included, because we know this is a family magazine and you won't print that photo. Any dizziness after pole dancing is NOT the result of imbibing from the Brewfest keg."

Around Azeroth: It's a wonderful life in high-def

"Squeeeeee!" exclaimed submitter Peanutbutter. "It's my wee elekk plushie from beta, along with my adorable HD gnome. So much cute packed into one image. My brain struggles to process it. And yes, animated pigtails do indeed live up to the hype!" But what about the creepy huge new gnome eyes, Peanutbutter? You guys look like Bratz dolls. *dodges many tiny, adorable kicks*

Around Azeroth: Trust me, I'm a healer

"So I arrived too late to kill the Sha of Doubt," writes submitter Demonmoose of The Outcast on The Maelstrom (EU-A). "No big deal. I'm here now to ... err ... 'heal' your injuries. If you could ignore the wings, that would be great." No, no, healing is supposed to hurt a little bit. That green tether that feels like it's sucking the life out of you is actually your bones knitting together! Now, I'm going to need to remove your soul for a little bit, just to make sure it isn't damaged.

Around Azeroth: Holy moley

I knew that it takes skill to play a raiding priest, but I never thought I'd see something like this. Submitter Steve has sent in a screenshot of a successful 25-man Throne of Thunder raid, made up entirely of priests. When they cleared it, after what I assume was a truly ridiculous number of wipes, they dropped Angelic Feathers over Lei Shen's corpse to celebrate their victory. Now if only it was a raid of all gnome priests ...

Around Azeroth: Feel the burn

"Fedjeen of Wyrmrest Accord (US-A) was a very small boy when Greymane built the wall," writes today's submitter. "He knew nothing of the outside world. But when the wall came down, Fedjeen went berserk. He ran all over Azeroth and then Draenor, getting into everything just like a curious puppy. But Fedjeen hasn't quite figured out how some parts of life work yet. He was enchanted with the Brazier of Dancing Flames from the first moment he saw her, and invited her on a picnic. I guess if he singes his whiskers when he tries to kiss her, he'll figure it out."
